Holidays are meant to be relaxing, but when you're traveling abroad with young children and need to hire a car at the airport of your destination, you should take a few moments to read the following tips in order to guarantee a safe and comfortable journey.

The most important thing to bear in mind is to protect your children at any time inside and outside the car. Do not allow any exceptions just while you're on holiday.

When you book your holiday car make sure to reserve a car seat in advance. Child seats are considered additional services which are offered locally, but most car hire companies do not guarantee availability of the appropriate safety seat if this service was not booked in advance. Remember that occasionally they may go quickly, especially when you're travelling in the high season and/or school holidays.

If you travel with small babies (less than 6-8 months old) please make sure that the car hire company confirms the availability of the appropriate size for the height and weight of your baby. Many car rental companies buy child seats in bulk and offer one standard model which is generally suitable for children from 8 months to 4 years, but these seats are not adequate for babies which are not able to sit upright. If the car hire company cannot guarantee the availability of the type of child seat you require for safety reasons you should consider bringing your own restraint. There is no way of travelling safely with such small children without the appropriate car seat.

What Does Your New Baby Need?

Your 9 months of pregnancy is almost over and you to start thinking of the needs of your furture newborn. When you walk into a baby boutique, you will be amazed at the number of products marketed to new parents. The choices are overwhelming and you may wonder what you really need for your new baby. In reality, babies need very little. Most of the products marketed to new parents are not absolutely necessary for your baby, but may be helpful for you. It depends on your lifestyle and your baby's temperament. There are a few basics that every baby needs, such as clothes and a place to sleep.

The baby will need a place to sleep when you get home from the hospital. This can be a crib, bassinette or cradle. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that babies sleep in their parents' bedrooms for the first six months of life. This combined with sleeping on their backs has been shown to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

If you will be putting the baby to sleep in your room, you need to determine how much room you have for a bed. You may not have room for a large crib in your bedroom and prefer something smaller, such as a cradle or bassinette. A co-sleeper is a bassinette that attaches to the side of your bed. It has three sides like a crib and the fourth side is open to your bed. Some mothers find that this arrangement makes breastfeeding in the middle of the night easier and more convenient.

In most states, the hospital staff will check to be sure you have a car seat to take the baby home from the hospital. You can use a baby carrier type car seat with a base that stays in the car. The seat can be used as a carrier and attached to the shopping cart when you go to the store. You could also use a convertible car seat that converts from rear facing to forward facing as your baby grows. Smaller babies don't always fit well at first in this type of seat.

When you go shopping for a seat, be sure it will fit well in your car. Most stores will allow you to try out the floor model in your car to ensure the right fit. Your local police department may conduct free child safety seat checks. A study by the National Safe Kids Campaign showed that eighty five percent of parents do not use the seats correctly. A sling or soft infant carrier is a great piece of baby equipment. You will need to carry your baby around in stores or in your home. Very young babies like to be held and may cry in a car seat carrier or stroller. A sling works well for carrying your baby close to your body while keeping your hands free to tend to your other children or fill the shopping cart at the grocery store. A sling can be folded and put in the diaper bag for easy carrying. It may feel awkward at first, but with practice you will get the hang of it. Some slings come with a DVD to show you how to use it properly.

Your baby will need diapers and diaper changing supplies. You will need to decide if you will use disposable or cloth diapers. Stock up on diapers while you are still pregnant to avoid having to run out to the store in the first few weeks home from the hospital. Babies typically go through eight to ten diapers in a twenty four hour period. You will also need baby wipes to clean the baby at changing time. Most babies don't need powder or creams, unless there is a diaper rash. It may be wise to keep a tube of ointment on hand in case baby gets red.

You will need clothing for the baby that is appropriate to the season. Some parents like to buy a cute outfit for coming home from the hospital. You will need a few sleepers, baby gowns and onesies for the baby to wear at home. One or two cute outfits are fun for company, but baby will likely spend most of the time in comfortable sleepers in the early weeks. The baby will need a hat to protect his head from the sun in summer and the cold in winter. You will need some receiving blankets and a warmer blanket for cold weather. If it is winter, you may want a snow suit to keep the baby warm.

You will need some feeding supplies. What you need depends on how you are feeding your baby. If you are breastfeeding your baby, you need very little. You may want a breast pump if you plan to supplement with breast milk in bottles. Otherwise, you will need some breast pads for leaking and a tube of breast cream for sore nipples in the early days of nursing. If you are formula feeding you will need a supply of formula and bottles.

There are a wide variety of extra gadgets on the market for little babies, such as swings, bouncy chairs and baby gyms. You may or may not want to spend money on these. In some cases, they can keep your baby occupied and happy for a few minutes. Not all babies like the swing or bouncy chair. If you aren't sure, consider trying out a friend's swing to see if your baby likes it before you spend the money. What you really need will depend on your baby and you.

A road trip is a great way to �get away� without flying cross country. Pack up the car, pack up the baby and pick up your partner. There are a few things to remember when heading out on the road with your little one. Your roadmap to a successful journey will depend on many things� here are some simple solutions for your next adventure:

Firstly, make sure your car seat is securely fastened in the car. �80% of all car seats are installed incorrectly�. Now is a good time to recheck the seat�s instructions and tighten up the straps. Baby will be safe, sitting snuggly in her seat. In most vehicles the middle of the back seat is the safest place for baby, but every vehicle is a little different so check your vehicle�s manual too.

If you are going to be riding up front, make sure your diaper bag is within reach. You may need a receiving blanket, bib or binkie. A cooler is also a good idea tucked behind one of the seats. You can premix some bottles or have some baby food close at hand. And although it might be tempting to slip baby out of her car seat for a quick feed, use feeding time to pull over at rest stop and get a little down time. Inflatable nursing pillows and bottle warmers that hook into your car�s AC adapters are great gear to have on hand.

It is a good idea to plan rest stops about every 2-3 hours to keep everyone happy. You will have to get creative on ways to entertain her in between stops. An onboard DVD player and Baby Einstein mean a 30 minute break from singing and story telling for you!

Remember, window shades are a must for summer car travel. A cool, comfortable baby is a content traveler.

A road trip is also not the time for her best outfit complete with zippers, hooks and rivets. Make sure to dress her in something comfortable. Anything with snaps or buttons in the back could really start to dig in to baby�s delicate skin after a few hours in her car seat. Your trunk will no doubt be packed with overflowing suitcases, a case of diapers, and all of baby�s favorite toys, but it is a good idea to have a spare outfit in easy reach. Fill a large Ziploc bag with a spare outfit so you don�t have to empty the entire contents of your suitcase at a rest stop just to find a fresh onesie.

You are bound to find some family friendly features at stops along the way. Getting there is supposed to be half the fun, so�above all enjoy the journey!

Flying with Your Baby - Tips to Make Your Trip Enjoyable

So, you are going to board an airplane with your baby. Before you go on a flight in the U.S., you have to find out the safety rules and regulations of the particular airline and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These rules govern what you can and cannot do with your child in flight. Most domestic airlines follow the following guidelines:

• Under 40 pounds or two years old, a child must either be carried in a paying passenger's lap or they must be in an infant carrier like a car seat or some other convertible restraint. Also, they have to be situated in the window seat of a non-exit row. The child restraint system must have an FAA-approval label and it must be securely fastened in an airplane seat using the provided seatbelt.

• All children over 40 pounds must have their own seats and wear the provided seatbelt low and snug across the hips. Booster seats are not allowed.

Baby on Board

While traveling with an infant you have one of two choices. The first is to carry your infant and travel with them in your lap. The airline will allow you to wear your baby in a sling or carrier while the airplane is in flight. However, during takeoff, turbulence with the seat belt sign on, and landing, they will require you to remove your carrier (or sling) and hold your baby in your arms. If you choose this option you will only be required to purchase one airline seat ticket, but this option has obvious safety issues to consider, as they will only be restrained in your arms. Some airlines may not allow this option.

The second choice is to take along an FAA approved car seat. Such a car seat should have a sticker to that effect stuck on it somewhere; generally you can find it on the underside of the seat. If your car seat does not have a sticker attached to it then you will need to call the manufacturer and ask if the car seat you own is FAA approved or not.

If your infant's car seat is approved, you will carry it with you on the plane and place it in the seat next to you. This traveling option requires that you purchase an additional seat for your child, though you may be able to get a discount or a free seat in a non-crowded flight if you ask. The carrier has to be on a window seat so they are not blocking other passengers from getting into and out of their seats. Also, make sure it's not wider than sixteen inches, the width of most airline seats.

If you go this route, and you're travelling alone with your infant, you will quickly realize how much superhuman effort you will need to carry the car seat, your carry-on luggage, and your baby! Try this instead: Wear a front carrier like a Snugli or Baby Bjorn with baby secure inside, then strap the car seat to your back using a Cheeky Monkey Pac Back. That way you'll still have both your hands free.

Flying Options For Older Infants

If your baby is between 22 and 44 pounds, you have three options available. The first is to hold your child, under the age of two, in your lap. This is the same scenario as if your child were still and infant. The second option again is to use an FAA approved car seat which will be secured in the window seat of the plane.

The third and new option is a harness known as the CARES flight harness. This restraint, easily stored in your carry-on luggage or purse, can be used instead of a car seat by children between 22 and 44 pounds, or 1 to 4 years. The harness is FAA approved for flight and is much less bulky than trying to carry around your car seat in the airport and onto the plane. While the CARES flight harness can be a bit pricey at about $75, it also insures your child is the safest possible, which in my opinion is priceless.

How To Install Car Seat Covers

Seat covers should snug fit the seat with no sagging ends. Though it requires a very few instruction to follow, the process of installation is very important. There are a few important instructions to follow when attempting to install car seat covers, though the installation method will vary depending on the type and style of seat covers you have.

In the case of universal bucket seats, firstly take off headrest and place seat cover over the top of seat and pull it down over the seat. Then place bottom of seat cover nicely over seat bottom. After that, fit base of cover snugly over seat. Later, fasten elastic under seat with supplied "S" hooks. At last, tie the supplied cord in position to ensure that the seat cover is held in correct shape. Check the seat cover is perfectly fitting the seat. After all the processes are over, re-install the headrest.

Installation of custom fit seat covers requires more steps than any other car seat covers. Firstly, remove any guards or shields covering original material that may obstruct seat cover installation. Warning to Parents: Booster Seats & the LATCH System

I was recently hired to write many articles on child safety. While researching I found out that I did not have my 2 ฝ year old properly restrained in his car set. First, I found out that he was too tall to remain in the 5-point harness and he had met the weight limit on the 5-point harness. He needed to be moved to a booster seat. I bought an Eddie Bauer Convertible Seat that is supposed to grow with the child, and it has.

Here is the warning!

I had my child�s car seat LATCHed in and when I adjusted the seat to make it a booster I left the LATCH on. I assumed it would keep my child safer, but this assumption was completely wrong! If your child is in a convertible child seat and you begin to use it as a booster seat YOU MUST REMOVE THE LATCH SYSTEM! If you have to slam on your breaks, or God Forbid get in a car accident, your child�s booster seat is suppose to move forward with your child. As your child and the booster move forward the seat belt system will react much quicker and when your child is pulled back, with their booster, the booster seat will take the brunt of the impact. Now, if you leave your LATCH on, with the same above situation, your child will fly forward and their seat will not. It takes much longer for the seat belt system to realize that it is suppose tighten up- if it does at all.

What Car Seat Companies Said

I called 4 popular companies that produce child booster seats and they all said it is dangerous for parents to leave the LATCH system on and all of their manuals specify that you should not leave it on. I researched the Internet and several times found, �The LATCH does not need to be used with the booster seat.� Well, �does not have to be� and �completely dangerous� are two different stories.

My Research

I thought I would research a bit further and I called several home daycare providers in my area. These providers often transport children and the laws for these providers are pretty specific. However, not one knew about the danger of LATCH systems with booster seats. In fact, two different providers said they had to put on their breaks and a child in their care flew forward in their booster seat. One woman said the seat belt clicked in really late and the other said one of her kids flew out, his feet landed on the floor of the car, and then the seat belt system clicked in. She had to pull over and help him out of the seat belt before she could put him back in the seat. Now you may be thinking that their cars were old, but they are required by law to have newer vehicles and if they buy another car it must be a brand new-never driven vehicle. The women that had these 2 kids slide forward had newer cars; one had a 2004 minivan and another had a 2005 minivan.

PLEASE refer to your child�s car seat manual for proper instructions! If you do not have the manual call the manufacturers number, which should be located on your child's car seat. If you are uncomfortable with your child�s seat not using the LATCH system, there are car seats that have higher weight and height limits for the 5-point harness. Normally, if your child hits 40 pounds or their shoulders go above the highest strap slot they need to be moved into a booster. Some special seats let your child weigh up to 65 pounds before they must be removed from the 5-point harness. No matter what seat you choose, please remove the LATCH system when you child moves into a booster seat.

3. Be sure before starting you read your car seat manufacturers user guide carefully and completely.

4. Once you install the seat, either using a LATCH system or traditional belt, check to make sure the seat doesn't move more than one inch in any direction.

5. If using a rear facing seat or infant carrier make sure the seat is angled properly to support your babies head.

Because it is so important, its worth saying again. If you have any questions or concerns about installing your child�s car seat, have it checked out by a certified technician. This only takes a short amount of time and can save you loads of headaches when trying to install your baby�s carseat. When it comes to your child�s safety, you deserve the best!
