Picking A Suitable Stroller

By K.Siva Kumar

What type of stroller will work best for you and your baby? It really depends on where you plan on taking her in the stroller and what you plan on doing. Let's take a quick look at the three major models:

Traditional Stroller

It works well in the city, and walking around on pavement or concrete paths. Most models have a basket below for storage. Some of them come with cup holders, side pockets for extra storage etc. Models that combine a car seat with stroller are also available.

Umbrella Stroller

These are the small, simple strollers that fold down so they dont take up much more space than an umbrella. Most parents like to choose this stroller because of its convenience. This stroller is less weight and low price. Since it is very compatible it wont have all the features like main stroller. Consider getting one of these in addition to your main stroller and keep it in the car. They are easy to load and unload, easy to open and put back together.

Baby Jogger

If you will be walking on rougher terrain or are planning on doing a lot of walking or running for exercise, choose a baby jogger. The larger wheels give you and baby a smoother ride. There is model named Baby Jobber 2 which is not for new born babies.

Newborn Necessities

By Catherine G

Shopping for the expected baby

Baby things are so adorable, and so expensive. Which of the many newborn accessories do you really need? It can be an adventure, trying to make sure that you will have everything that your new baby will need. You will however end up with a lot of items that never actually get used, and things that you don't have enough of.

If you are going to have a baby shower, it is a good idea to make a list of things you need and include the list of suggested gifts in the invitation. Then after the baby shower, you can buy the rest of the necessities.

Accepting hand me downs from friends and family is also good, if the items are in good condition. Especially clothes and blankets, because babies grow fast and blankets are soiled quickly, so it is good to have clothes in increasing sizes, and plenty of extra blankets.

The following list is of "cannot live without items", that every nursery needs.

Bassinet

Car seat

Sleepers

Onesies

Bottles - nipples

Socks

Pacifiers

Blankets light and warm

Baby bathtub

First aid kit for newborns (includes nail clipper, comb, thermometer, etc.)

Baby monitor

Diapers

Diaper bag

Natural wipes

I know, there are a million other "must have" baby gadgets and things advertised on TV and the web. But most of those things are not really necessary for a newborn. For example, adorable outfits that would be so cute to see on your baby, but are hard to get on the baby, who will then probably either throw up on, or leak out of the diaper into. Warm, soft sleepers that snap up the front are just easier for you and more comfortable for the baby anyway. For the first few months, all your newborn really needs is to be loved, fed, and changed, the rest of his or her time is going to be spent sleeping and looking around. Warm jammies in winter, a light onesie, or sleeper in summer, bottles, a bath, and a pacifier (if you're going to use one), a safe comfortable place to sleep and another to watch the world from are the only necessities that your new baby really will need.

Essential New Car Safety Features

By Lydia Quinn

If you're out shopping for a new car, besides cost and aesthetics, one of the most important things to look for is safety features. What features do you need, which features are must haves? Let's look at some options:

Air Bags

By far, the number one option, standard on many cars nowadays. Air bags have come along way since their inception and are safer and more effective than ever before. Air bags protect your head and face during a head on collision. Many new vehicles even offer air bags for your passenger and side cushion air bags for side impact crashes. Air bags have been proven to save lives during crashes and getting a vehicle with at least driver and passenger air bags should be a priority.

Seat Belts

Every vehicle comes with seat belts, but there are some new innovations in seatbelt technology that you may want to consider. Automatic crash tensioners are designed to react to any crash or impact situation and tighten your seatbelt to keep you in place and, in theory, safer during a crash. Another new technology are the belt webbing grabbers, these are designed to clamp the belt outside the reel to prevent injuries during a crash or impact. Other seat belts or safety restraints include built in child safety restraints or built in child car seats.

Anti-Lock Brakes

Now a standard on most vehicles, like air bags and seat belts, anti-lock brakes are a safety necessity. Anti-lock brakes are designed to prevent locking of your brakes to lessen the chance of skidding.

Head Restraints

Every modern vehicle has head restraints, or head rests to prevent your head from snapping back and causing whiplash during a sudden stop or crash. Many new cars even offer head restraints or rests for back seats.

GPS or OnStar

If you are prone to getting lost, having GPS or the OnStar system could save your life. GPS stands for global positioning system. Originally designed for military use in the 1980's, GPS connects you to a web of satellites and once they sense where you are, they can tell you very accurately where to go and many devices even provide maps and directions on an LCD screen.

OnStar is a vehicle safety device which connects you to a person via audio and can provide you help with directions, concierge like services and even emergency services. OnStar comes as a standard feature on many GM vehicles.

Maclaren Strollers - A Perfect Blend Of Style And Safety

By Alice Quintin

Maclaren strollers have been in existence since 1965 when Owen Maclaren, a former test pilot and aeronautical designer, decided to create a buggy that would be lightweight and easy to use. He made his first buggy in 1967 and the blue and white pinstriped B-01 buggy became a huge hit. All of Maclaren strollers are the descendants of that original design.

The company has always offered a wide variety of standard and premium Maclaren strollers in the market. Year 2007 was no exception: 9 buggy models, dozens of color and design options for every taste, season and terrain.

All Maclaren strollers come with the following safety and comfort features: 5 point harness system, removable washable seat, compact umbrella fold, foot-operated parking brakes, shopping basket, high performance aluminum frame, water resistant hood and a rain cover.

2007 Maclaren Strollers (single seat models):

Maclaren Triumph stroller - company's flagship buggy, another lightweight model designed for a baby from about three months. It features a reclining seat and the standard 5 point harness system. It also has a large basket for storage under the seat and folds very easily. Its round hood protects a baby from direct sunlight.

Sleek and sporty Maclaren Quest stroller is a fun pram-alternative with 4 seat positions and suitable for children from three months and up. Its basic weight is only 12.2 lbs with a child capacity of 55 lbs. Besides standard package it also features an adjustable leg rest, tilting hood with a peek-a-boo window. Although both Quest Sport and Quest Mod buggies have the same mechanical features and functionality, retro style fabric patterns give Maclaren Quest Mod a bit different, classic look.

Techno XT is a high-tech flagship of Maclaren strollers with superb comfort features and sporty design. This particular stroller is great for newborn babies, and it grows with your baby from birth to 55 lbs. Baby Saftey in Cities

By Grant Carroll

One of your main concerns as a parent raising a baby in the city is your babys safety. The city does a wonderful job of offering a wide spectrum of culture and experience that cannot be found anywhere else. However, with that wonderful experience comes a host of possible dangers. This is not meant to scare anyone away from the joys of city living, but its always better to be safe than sorry. Health hazards, transportation and public playgrounds present possible dangers that should be guarded against.

With such a large population, its no wonder that health hazards exist. Two big ones that affect your little city dweller are ozone and pollution. To protect your family from ozone, watch the news for ozone warnings. Usually, the danger time is from 1 to 5 p.m. so keep outside playtime in the morning and evening. Also watch for air pollution warnings and avoid outside play during danger times. You must also keep watch on the indoor air pollution. Try to keep the apartment ventilated and clean any window A/C units. Dont smoke, and if your child has allergies, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. If you live in a building or home constructed before 1978, keep a lookout for the dangers of lead paint. For all info on lead risks, contact the EPAs National Lead Information Center (www.epa.gov/lead/nlic.htm) . The last two problems are mold and pests. Mold is best controlled by controlling moisture. If problems do arise, notify your landlord and/or clean it immediately. For more info go to www.epa.gov/iaq/molds/moldguide.html. As for pests, everyones familiar with cockroaches, rats and mice. The best prevention for all pests is cleanliness. Clean up any food spills or messes and tightly store all pantry food in sturdy plastic bins.

Large cities have many forms of transportation from mass transit to taxi cabs, and its important to keep your baby safe while on the go. One big danger on the subway or bus is the presence of germs. Babies and toddlers love to touch everything, so try to keep them restrained and invest in some hand sanitizer. In case the train or bus makes a sudden stop, make sure your toddler is firmly seated at all times. If no seats are available, hold them as securely as you can, but usually people give up seats if they see you with children. As for taxis, be sure to bring something like a car seat or travel vest to strap in your little one. If youve ever ridden in a taxi, you understand how dangerous it can be for an infant or toddler. Also beware of intersections while walking as they are the most common place for tragic accidents.

As for playgrounds, also make an effort to inspect the equipment and surface even if it is owned by the city. Many playgrounds are not very safe for your toddler, so keep them closely supervised.

Fitting The New Baby In

By Marie Wilson

Sometimes all the talk in the baby magazines and websites can ring a bit hollow when the subject turns to putting together a baby's room for your newborn. Those articles and books about decorating an adorable baby's room work from the presumption that you have an entire room you can give over to the baby.

But if you live in a small apartment like many of us do, you are going to have to adapt that dream. You are just as excited about the coming of that new baby to your home as anyone else. But you have to be a bit more creative especially when it comes to baby furniture.

Often the solution for how to accommodate the baby is simply to superimpose the baby's stuff on top of your stuff. For her crib or cradle, at least at first, you may need to bring the baby into the same room with mom and dad. This is where a crib that attaches to your bed so it doesn't get far away is a good choice. And for the nursing months, this is actually preferable so when baby wakes up hungry, mom or dad is right there.

As the baby gets older and perhaps needs a crib separate from parents, this is where some creative use of dividers can be very effective at creating the illusion of two rooms out of one. You can create a small space in the master bedroom perhaps no bigger than the crib itself and let baby sleep back there out of the glare of lights and separate from daddy's snoring at least a little bit.

But because you really don't have a separate space to set aside for baby, you may have to integrate the baby furniture in with the living room or dining room things. You can keep a baby's dresser in the living room and when the time comes to entertain, drape it with an elegant cloth to disguise what it is and then decorate it with potpourri and other decorative items so the baby furniture converts to a nondescript display piece that nobody needs to know why its there.

Similarly, toy chests, changing tables and other items that are needed from time to time can be stored away behind other things to be brought out when needed and slipped away again when not needed. Items needed to go out with baby such as a baby carrier, stroller and baby car seat can just live in the car back seat or trunk and never come into the apartment at all.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to find some overflow storage to use for items you must be able to lay your hands on but they don't need to be around every day. Or this storage could be used for mom and dad's stuff while baby takes up space in the apartment on the hedge that at some time in the near future you will move into a place with more space so that storage unit can be cancelled.

Raising a family in any setting takes creative thinking and the ability to solve problems. So if you need to make some accommodations to allow baby into your life, it wont be the last time that your lifestyle got a significant restructuring because of this sweet little life that basically moves in and takes over. But it's worth it for her little smile and the joy she brings you. And so you are a bit crowded. You're a family now and that is what is important.

Tips for Flying with a Toddler

By Kathryn Lively

Sometimes it cannot be avoided, taking a child under two on a plane for an emergency trip. Perhaps you have heard (or even experienced) horror stories of being trapped on a plane for two hours while a baby screeched the entire time. Maybe, too, you were the person who sat next to the harried mother as she tried to soothe her squirming infant. To be the harbringer of such misery is not a welcome prospect.

However, a plane trip with a toddler or infant need not be a harrowing experience, for the mother or other passengers. By taking precaution and taking care of your child, you can arrange for an easy ride.

Have the child's birth certificate ready: Though you don't need to purchase a ticket for a child under two (the child can sit on your lap for the flight), you will need to show proof of your child's age and custody. Be sure to have your child's birth certificate handy when you show your ID at check-in.

Consolidate personal effects and baby's things: Most airports will allow you to take a stroller to your gate, though you will have to put the stroller through the X-ray. Therefore, be prepared to watch over your child in this time. A younger baby in a car seat will be fine, but remember to keep a firm hand on a toddler of walking age so he doesn't stray. To this end, it is best to check in as much luggage as possible and carry only the essentials - ID, money, wallet, diapers and baby items. Rather than carry a purse and diaper bag aboard, it is helpful to consolidate everything into one bag. Less to carry, less worry.

Feed and change baby before boarding: Keep your baby clean and happy before boarding, and transfer that good feeling as you enter the plane. Try to coincide your baby's mealtime as close to your flight as possible, and always keep snacks ready for the flight to calm any fits (graham crackers for a solid eater, an extra bottle for an infant). If you breastfeed, consult with the airline before your flight to determine if there are any privacy options, like the possibility of an extra seat in the back of the plane to use. If your flight is full, keep a baby blanket on hand should the need to nurse arise.

Sometimes, a trip will not always go as planned, and your baby may need changing during flight. Anyone who has had the arduous task of changing a baby on board a plane will tell you it is not easy! Consult with the airline before you leave with regards to your options. You may find, too, you are flying with some very understand passengers who may be willing to help.

Bring a diversion: A favorite toy or blanket, a book, or a set of keys may provide entertainment for a child unwilling to nap during flight. By keeping the child's focus in one place during the flight, you can prevent fits and distraction of other passengers.

Have a bottle or pacifier for the descent: A child's ears can be very sensitive to the drop in air pressure as a plane makes it descent. Just as your own ears "pop" so will the child's, and it is a pain they cannot understand or bear. While adults will chew gum to relieve the discomfort, a child cannot do the same, so it is important to have a pacifier or bottle handy during descent. The sucking motion will help ease the pain of pressure for the child.

Planning ahead and proper diversion will help make a child's plane trip easier, for the child, the mother, and fellow passengers.

Baby Essentials For Parents On A Budget

By Maria Owens

When a new baby is expected there will hopefully be a lot of excitement but there may also be financial worry as there are certain things that need to be bought. Many of you may have friends and/or family that want to contribute so why not give them a list of needed items to save you getting a whole load of stuff that you don't really need. That way the costs can be shared and need not b such a heavy burden for you.

First, the big stuff.

1. Car seat- this is an essential safety item and unless you are absolutely 100% sure of how it has been used and that it has not been involved in any accident and it is fully working, then this item really should be bought from new.

A birth - 4 yrs version is probably the most economical.

2. A cot, again if you can get a second hand one GREAT. Make sure it complies with safety standards so that a baby's head can not become trapped in the rails for example. It is recommended that to reduce the risk of cot death a NEW mattress should be used. DO NOT use a second hand mattress.

Second hand clothing is great as it is often hardly worn. organic clothing is great and has been cultivated without the use of toxic chemicals and pesticides. It is more durable because it has not undergone so many harsh treatments and so will hopefully last longer. Essential baby items are baby vest and onesies for the first few months.

4. Breastfeeding is best so you do not need to buy any bottle feeding products. I had three children and never bought any of that stuff.

5. Washabe nappies/diapers will save you a fortune, not to mention your contribution in minimizing the size of landfill sites.

6. No need to buy loads of smelly baby soaps and creams as research suggests that these should not be used for the first month of life. Water is the only necessity.

Do not worry about material goods for your little bundle. Love, security and happiness are the most important things for your baby.

A Day in a Life of a Baby

By Terry Ross

Dont you wish you were a baby again? Unlike most babies and young children I have no desire to grow up, being a baby is just brilliant.

What a start to the day, no worries about getting tired at work as a baby I can wake up early safe in the knowledge that I can sleep whenever I like and scream the place down. Generally a screaming baby gets a brilliant reaction, attention from all directions with everyone happy to do anything if it will just shut me, the screaming baby, up.

Well that the lungs exercised and the belly full and for me, a baby boy the extra satisfaction of getting a good eyeful, excellent training for a few years time!

With breakfast over its time to play with baby toys. Dont you just love it when daddy gets really excited over baby toys? Of course he should have grown up long ago but whos to argue if he wants to make a complete ass of himself just for his adorable babys amusement.

Oops, dirty baby diaper, no worries mummy or daddy will fix it pretty quick. Wait for it, thats the diaper taken off so lets start the fountain, its good for a laugh. A baby always comes out on top adults have a lot to learn when it comes to changing baby diapers.

Oh well, morning fun over, just enough time for a quick nap before mid morning snack. On second thoughts lets go for the rocking baby to sleep approach, Im sure someone will oblige if I scream loud enough.

Looks like were off out somewhere, no worries Ill just sleep through the boring bits and Im bound to see something interesting. Baby strollers are brilliant, really comfortable with great designs for the fashion conscious baby.

Im not too keen on the car seat with wings, not really built with baby curiosity in mind. No worries Ill just cry a few times until they understand that I need a new one. A few extra dirty baby diapers and a couple of bouts of throwing up might help.

Baby socialisation is pretty good no one worries about throwing baby girls and baby boys together so you can ogle all you like.

Evenings are brilliant, daddys home and happy to play for hours, them theres the evening feed, bath time (not too keen on the hair washing bit though), the pretty lights on the nursery ceiling and then daddy reads from one of my baby books. A brilliant end to a brilliant day who wants to work!

Child Safety Airbag Tips

By Milos Pesic

Airbags are deemed important for preventing injuries and deaths in car crashes. Yes, thats what most surveys have noted. It was in fact reported by recent researches that airbags save more than 1,500 lives per year. That may seem amazing in the first place, but just like any thing in the world, airbags have their own disadvantages. Although it is highly beneficial for reducing the chances of injury for adults in a crash, the force of an airbag when deployed can injure the small children seriously and severely.

Well, the real reason for its being injurious to toddlers is that when deployed, the airbags have the tendency to inflate faster than the blink of an eye. They tend to explode out of the dashboard and side panels of the car to protect the driver and the front seat passenger from hitting hard surfaces during a crash. But imagine that same force hitting a small child in the front seat of the car. As you may realize, thats too dangerous for them. It is basically for this reason that certain child safety airbag tips are considered.

Now if you want to know exactly how to protect your small children from the injurious force of deployed airbags, I recommend you to read on. I have given below a few child safety airbag tips for you to consider. Just note all these child safety airbag tips and make sure to apply these tips if possible.

* Children under the age of 12, including newborns, should ride in the rear seat, buckled up comfortably. For further security, parents are advised to use child safety seats, booster seats or safety belts that fit well to them.

* To ensure that the child safety airbag will not hit your child so badly, place your infants in a rear facing child seat and fasten securely in the back seat of the car. Note that the perfect place for children is the back seat.

* It is important to ensure that your child is buckled up with both lap and shoulder belts on every trip. It is also important to move the front passenger and the driver seat as far back from the dashboard as practical.

* If you carry with you an infant that needs constant attention, you should bring another adult to ride with them. This is suggested as part of this child safety airbag tips knowing that it is easy to get distracted, which is not good when driving.

* Always wear your safety belt, and make your child securely buckled up on his comfortable seat.

So those basically are the most helpful child safety airbag tips Ive known. Consider them and you will benefit on how effective they are for preventing child injuries during car crashes.

September Is Child Passenger Safety Month

By Sarah McBride

For those of you out there who do not know it yet, the month of September has just been known as the Child Passenger Safety Month. This happened when the National Automobile Dealers Association, which is commonly known and referred to as the NADA, has proclaimed that such a month should dwell on such an issue.

Indeed, this is a very good move for NADA. After all, not all parents do understand that children need much better safety in cars and automobiles compared to adults. And yes, children also do need special safety devices to keep them harm-free in cases of accidents, crashes, or simple collisions. It is not enough for parents and car owners to simply put in safety features like bumpers and other Saab interior parts. There are specially crafted child safety devices and accessories that would keep children safe and sound inside the vehicle.

With September being the Child Passenger Safety Month, new car dealers all over the United States would be hosting at their local dealerships child safety seat inspections. They would be doing this as part of NADAs national campaign which they call the Boost for Safety campaign. This program has actually been created with the assistance and partnership of NADA with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA.

According to William Bradshaw who is the chairman of NADA and is also one of the newest car dealers in the Southern California area, Parents will do the right thing if they have the right information. Unfortunately, many parents do not have the right information when it comes to child safety seats and dealers want to change that.

The Boost for Safety campaign is surely very timely. Just keep in mind that September is also when children start going back to school and with many children being back on the roads and streets, it is essential to disseminate information about such a campaign towards child safety in vehicles.

Travel Tips for a Comfortable and Safe Holiday

By Katina Mooneyham

So you want to travel for any holiday this year? Travel in comfort and safety with these tips and guidelines.

Travel in Comfort

You want to make sure you know the weather. Watch local weather forecasts. The Internet has made things easier for people to check out temperature and weather in other cities. Be sure to use this to your advantage. You can pack lightly but pack smarter by knowing the weather. Make sure the clothes you wear are appropriate for the right temperatures.

In winter months, traveling in comfort may mean traveling with layers. Layering clothes should help even when traveling within a warmer environment. Be prepared by bringing an extra sweater or jacket. Make sure you wear heavy socks if your feet get cold easily. This can help you remain comfortable.

Spring and summer are the busiest times for traveling. Even in spring, the temperatures outside can get warmer. Be prepared by wearing layers that can be removed in case warmer weather does set in.

In July, temperatures are usually hot in most places in the United States. Summer weather can be a burden on many including young and old. You want some lightweight, comfortable clothes. Clothes that are too heavy or a darker color may cause discomfort to most. Shoes are also a common problem with people. Many people wear sandals and open toed shoes. But a good pair of sneakers that fit well and allow your feet to breathe is just as comfortable.

Travel by Car

Many people choose to travel by car for their holidays. Whether its a short trip or many hours (or a day long) trip, being prepared can help you remain safe on your trip. Here are some guidelines and tips to keep in mind when traveling by car.

1. Always let someone know when you are leaving. Letting someone else know when you left and the approximate time you plan to arrive at your destination can help if an emergency situation arises.

2. Get your car checked up! You should prepare your car ahead of time. Get the tires checked to make sure they are properly balanced. Replace any tires that show signs of wear and tear. Get an oil change if it is close to the time youd normally do it. Make sure your cars fluid levels are good too. A car that is well-taken care of can help you avoid the hassle of calling a tow truck in mid-trip.

3. Plan for some downtime especially if you have kids or the trip is a longer car ride. You will need time for breaks, rest stops and meals. You should really take a break every two to three hours if at all possible. This can help avoid travel fatigue. Switch drivers if at all possible every couple hours to help further relieve fatigue.

4. If you travel with kids, pack some exciting travel games. A binder full of coloring sheets, and things such as mazes and puzzles can help kids from getting bored especially on a long car trip.

Travel by Air

Some people may choose to travel by air. Be prepared for your airplane trip with these guidelines and tips.

1. Book as far in advance as possible. This can help eliminate some stress as the time for the trip nears. It allows you to focus on other things such as packing.

2. Be sure to follow all the guidelines at the airport. Most airports now have strict security guidelines. Arrive early to avoid possible long lines waiting at security checkpoints in the airport.

3. If you are traveling with an infant, check your airline procedures for an infant car seat. Many airlines do not provide one and you will need an extra seat for the infant if you use the car seat. You should plan on using the car seat for safety.

4. Pack as lightly as you can. Pack one outfit if you can in your carry on just in case your luggage arrives later or gets lost.

Safety Counts and So Does Fun

Be prepared for your trip months ahead and youll likely be less stressful around trip time. This will open up more possibilities for fun. Enjoy your trip to its fullest and be safe.

The Drive Home with Your Newborn

By Alvaro Castillo

The number one killer of children in this country is accidents. The leading accidental killer is the automobile. The risk to your child from the car is greater than the risk from childhood infectious diseases and cancer combined. Always be careful with kids and cars.

You may want to hold your baby in your arms on your way home from the hospital, but this is not in anyone's best interest. The driver will probably be excited about bringing the baby home and will be less attentive to road conditions than usual.

I have heard about of several tragic accidents in this setting. Have an infant car seat ready to use on the way home. Some hospitals may not let you leave with the infant unless you have a car seat. Remember that children should never sit in the front seat.

The back seat is safer whether or not your car is equipped with air bags, which are potentially deadly to children. Children should always war seatbelts-as should parents. Upon arriving home you need time and attention for yourself, your new infant and your other children, who probably are anxious to see you and the baby.

Contact with friends and relatives should be the next most important items on your agenda. If possible, have a relative or friend stay with you, so that he or she can help you with the household chores and free you for time with your children. Mothers who have no relative or no husband to help at home can seek help from neighbors, friends, social agencies, and employment agencies.

Is there life after birth? Becoming a new family is a major physical and emotional adjustment for everyone. In the first few days at home new parents often spend a great deal of time checking their new baby. Perfectly normal infants often appear strange in some way causing concern to new parents.

Most doctors are more than willing to sit down and explain the concerns that parents have over their babies. Very often, however, parents forget to ask about some detail, because of the excitement of having their child and because of the chaos at the hospital ward. It is suggested to write down any questions about your baby and make sure you get a satisfactory answer to each one.

Newborns spend most of their time sleeping, around 18 or even 20 hours, the 6-month-old sleeps 16 to 18 hours, and the 1-year-old 14 to 15 hours. You may observe several types of sleep states. In one state, the child will be motionless and have regular breathing, in another, the breathing will be irregular, the eyes will flutter and hands move

Infants also exhibit different stages of being awake, the least satisfying of which is crying. This is the infant's most obvious way of communicating needs, frustrations, and discomforts but there are other subtle ways of communicating that parents can learn to recognize.

Infants spend much of their quiet time looking and watching. In this stage, the infant is exploring the world with their eyes. They will stare intently into the parents' faces and follow them across the room. Babies have certain likes and dislikes in shapes, patterns, and even colors.

These preferences have been demonstrated even in the first few hours after birth. In the "active alert" state, the infant is looking around actively, as well as moving arms and legs. Newborn babies are often disappointing to parents who expect laughing, gurgling infants.

The image of babies most of us have is actually when they are 4 to 8 months old. Newborns are exciting but it will be many months before thy laugh and gurgle.

Baby Stroller Reviews

By Martin Smith

One way of deciding if a particular stroller is right for you and your baby is to test it out. Another way is to look at reviews of the baby stroller to see how it stands with those who have already used the same model you are looking at. The reviews of four different stroller types will address the pros and cons of each particular stroller.

The Graco Duo-glider - Metropolitan Standard Stroller is a multiple stroller and definitely has more pros than cons however, the decision is strictly yours to make. The seat of this stroller lies flat, it has a great price and great accessories, and it folds small for its size. The extras are nice, there is a five-point harness, and it strolls nicely. There is a huge storage basket under the seat, it is easy to open and easy to get in the car.

The cons of the Graco Duo-Glider is that the basket cannot be reached when the seat is lying flat. The seat sides need more support. The cup holder on the front seat must be removed to shut the trunk of the car.

The Per Prego Duette MT - Black Sable Twin Seat Standard Stroller is durable, has full suspension, and reclining seats. This is an easy to push stroller and it has a smooth ride. The seats can face each other and they both recline. It is narrow for shopping. Its design is high quality with lots of leg room and a five-point harness. There is a roomy seat area.

The complaints about the Per Prego Duette MT are that it is large and heavy. It is expensive. it is hard to fold. It takes up a lot of room. There is no storage basket and this stroller does not collapse all the way.

The Evenflo Cititour Silver Star Twin Seat Standard Stroller has a comfortable rear seat. This stroller can handle up to forty pounds in each seat. It has soft and padded material. There is a toddler drink and snack tray. This stroller steers rather easily and there is easy access to the basket.

Complaints about this stroller include the fact that the parent tray falls down. The front wheels squeak and wobble after about two weeks of usage The front canopy is too small for a toddler. It is difficult to open and close. The fabric has a tendency to catch in the joints of the frame.

Lets take a look at the Graco Quattro Tour 7411 LV - Travel System Stroller is said to be sturdy. It is easy to clean and use. It has great features. This is a very safe stroller. It is a complete traveling system which includes a stay in the car base. The car safety seat detaches from the base and is attached to the stroller frame. The car safety seat also can be an infant carrier. It is an excellent snug-ride infant seat with a useful base. It has a large storage basket. It requires only one hand to fold it.

The complaints about this particular stroller are that the company needs to produce more girl colors. This stroller is very bulky and heavy. It is a pricey model. It is oversized and again very heavy.

The only positive statement about the Combi Tetra TS Crimson Standard Stroller is that it has cool colors. The wheels dont turn properly and the basket is inaccessible when the seat is recline. There are three reclining positions only two of which work. It unfolds but doesnt lock which poses a serious risk to you and your baby and the frame is made of cheap plastic.

What To Take To The Hospital When Having A Baby

By Amy Jarman

The last thing you want to worry about when you go into labor, is trying to figure out what items you need to put in your hospital bag and trying to hunt them down before dashing to the hospital. Ideally you should have your hospital bag packed and waiting by the door by at least 2 weeks before your due date. That way, when the time is right, you can grab your bag and go without any last minute delays or worries.

It is useful to have 2 bags for yourself: one for labor and one for your hospital stay afterwards including your baby item essentials. It is also helpful to have your labor partner pack a bag in advance for themselves and some helpful labor items.

Labor Bag for you:

- Your Birth Plan, if you have one.

- Maternity Bathrobe. This is particularly useful for early stages of labor as you may need to walk around the hospital to progress labor. After the baby you will also need some sort of cover up to a nightgown, particularly if its the hospital excuse for a nightgown, when you need to walk the corridors.
- Slippers and socks
- A clean nursing top or front-opening nursing nightgown if you prefer to bring your own
- Drinks and snacks and breath mints
- A straw, which will make sipping liquids easier.
- Toiletries (hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, facial cream)
- Lip moisturizer
- Massage oils or lotions
- Eyeglasses (if needed)
- Cell phone and list of important numbers
- Magazines, music, word puzzles. Fun light reading to pass the time. Dont bring heavy involved reading or work from the office! You are looking for fun and mindless distraction to pass the time. Remember, you will be productive enough in a few hours to make up for any unproductive activities during your labor waiting period!
- Maternity pads (nighttime sanitary pads), and spare maternity underwear.
- Nursing bras. If you plan to wear a bra during labor, it is helpful to have a nursing bra on already if you plan to nurse your baby. Usually you will be allowed to nurse right away after birth. Make sure you wear a very comfortable fitting nursing bra, not one with underwires.

For Labor Partner:
Watch with a second hand to time contractions
- Camera/video camera if you want it and film/tape if needed
- Snacks, reading material
- Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste..)
- Change of clothes, particularly if they will be staying with you at the hospital for several days after the baby.
- Cell phone/phone card
- List of important numbers
- Dollar Bills for vending machine
- Water Spray/Mister for gentle cool-downs during labor.
- Tennis balls for back massage

Hospital Bag for your Postpartum Use:
Front opening nursing nightie
- Comfy clothes to wear for leaving the hospital. Remember you are not going to be able to wear non-maternity clothes a few days after having your baby! So bring comfortable maternity clothing or transitional clothing. Also, if you have a C-section, the last thing you will want is any pressure on your tummy. A comfortable cotton elastic waistband that fits below the belly or that is designed to fold down bellow the belly for comfort is best.
- Easy fitting footwear
- Change of underwear and maternity pads for heavy bleeding after birth
- Nursing Bras (at least 2). Make sure these are easy fitting nursing bras that do not have underwire. Wear a nursing bra with plenty of room and stretch as you breasts may increase up to a cup in size when you milk comes in.
- Personal music player and headphones
- Magazines and easy reading material. You will be too tired for any heavy reading!

Hospital Bag for Baby:

Last but certainly not least you will want to pack a few things for the new baby:

-Properly installed infant car seat. This is a must if you want to take your baby home with you! Make sure you have your car seat professionally installed several weeks before you go to the hospital. Any fire station can install your car seat for you. An alarming number of car seats are not properly installed by parents.
- Newborn diapers
- Infant hat
- Receiving blankets
- Newborn sleeper or outfits
- Socks/booties

If you have all of these essentials ready to go in advance, you can have peace of mind that you are well prepared when the time comes to have your baby!

What Type of Baby Equipment Will You Need?

By Morgan Hamilton

Are you planning to have a baby? Having a baby is a major event in any couples life and would often entails major adjustments as well. You will realize that you will need a big space just to accommodate all the baby equipment you will need. For such tiny beings, their stuff can certainly occupy a lot of space. Visiting family and friends can seem like a military operation and cant really be unplanned. You have to plan ahead and decide which equipment will be required for a particular trip. Many parents keep a bag ready and full of all the equipment theyll need. Going on grander trips like vacations requires even more preparation.

Baby equipment is also an expensive business, and some parents buy used equipment or receive gifts from grandparents and other relatives. If you have items for your firstborn, you can hand them some of them to your next baby. It is important to purchase products from reputable companies, to guarantee safety and quality.

Parents also need to consider a babys daily need such as, sterilization units, formula bottles, and bottlebrushes for cleaning the babys bottles. A teat brush is perfect for cleaning the teats. It would also be a good idea to obtain a set of bibs with convenient Velcro strips. If you are using non-disposables diapers, youll require pins for fastening them. It would also be good if you can have a changing mat that your baby can lie on and such a delicate bottom will require lots of moistened baby swipes.

It can be easy to over look the less obvious baby equipment youll need, like cotton tipped baby ear cleaners or baby nail clippers. Finding a cot with a good mattress and bedding will be crucial in giving your baby a good sleep. A well rested infant is a happy baby, with happy parents. You may also need a traveling cot for overnight visits to grandparents and other relatives.

Another major concern to consider when purchasing baby equipment is safe transportation. A good car seat is essential, and most stores will supply a trained individual to fit it in your car. A baby will also need a buggy. This can have a variety of accessories to cope with different weather conditions, such as a parasol to shade your baby from the sun and a rain cover to keep your infant dry and snug.

When your baby grows into a toddler, you will need other types of baby equipment to keep your child safe. To prevent accidents, install stair gates at the top and at the bottom of the stairs. Cooker guards will thwart your toddler from pulling down cooking pots, and socket guards will prevent your child from poking curios fingers into dangerous places.

Your baby equipment must keep up with your infants development, as your child progresses from formula into a variety of drinks and solid food. You will need weaning spoons and training cups at this phase of your babys growth.

Baby equipment can also provide a lot of fun, with colorful swings, play pens, and rocking cradles. You can choose to stencil cartoon character into your toddlers high chair. After a day of fun, you can lie down for the night while listening to the baby monitor.

How to Choose Baby Strollers

By Oliver Turner

One of the more important accessories for a parent is a baby stroller. With the many choices of strollers available in the stores today, it proves to be difficult to choose the right baby stroller for your baby. It has to be basically safe and comfortable for you and the baby and easy to open, close, maneuver and store.

There are many types of baby strollers found today like the carriage stroller which is a great first stroller and the umbrella stroller which is easy to fold and thus convenient as a secondary stroller to be used for jaunts and trips. The standard stroller is usually the primary baby stroller that comes with many features like storage basket and bumper tray.

Lightweight strollers are also great for traveling purposes but are generally high priced than its typical counterparts. The car seat/stroller combo is a great baby stroller to be used for those using the car regularly. You can go jogging taking your baby with you in the jogging stroller while tandem and side-by-side strollers are best for those having children close in age, twins or triplets. In these types of strollers, the seats are fixed next to each other, on a large, single frame.

When choosing the right baby stroller, make sure that it is sturdy, and is of quality construction. It should have all terrain wheels so that it can be used on all surfaces. There should be some safety features in the baby stroller and be comparatively easy to use by all parents. Make sure the stroller can fold and unfold easily and is rather maneuverable.

It is better to choose baby strollers that are easy to clean with removable and machine washable seat covers. Choose baby strollers that accommodate the baby as it grows and those that have storage baskets that are generously sized.

Our experts have made a research and found the best strollers and stroller stores. Find it only on the Strollers Planet. All about baby strollers and jogging strollers on http://www.leandernet.com/Baby-strollers/Baby-strollers

A New Baby Checklist

By Barbara Eastcairn

When preparing for the arrival of your new baby, it helps to have a checklist. If this is your first baby, you are unlikely to already have many of the things you will need.

The new baby checklist will include furniture, clothing, feeding equipment, safety equipment and some other items. All these baby-related requirements are sometimes called a 'layette'.

Furniture and accessories

  • A crib and a mattress with sheets (three or four sets); a soft swaddling blanket

  • A washtub; baby wash liquid; some hooded towels for after baby's bath

  • A changing table, or a changing pad (if you want to change baby on the floor) and baby wipes

  • A diaper pail

  • Blankets for the crib and the stroller

Other items you may want to have include a playpen, and a high chair for feeding (once your child is able to sit up). If your baby is very restless, a baby sleeping bag may help.

Clothing

  • A going home outfit

  • Six undershirts

  • Six stretch suits or 'onesies' (must open at crotch for changing)

  • Two hats; one sunhat

  • Six night gowns or sleepers (with long sleeves and long legs, and feet)

  • Two sweaters

  • Three pairs of booties or socks

  • A winter coat or fleece snowsuit

  • Four plastic-backed bibs (you may need more if baby dribbles a lot)

  • You will also need several dozen disposable or cloth diapers. If using cloth diapers, you will need pins, and several sets of waterproof pants to put over the diapers. Remember that your baby may need to be changed up to ten times a day in the early weeks.

Feeding

  • Nursing bottles for formula feeding (if not breast feeding)

  • Nipples for the nursing bottles

  • A bottle brush

  • Burp cloths (you could use cloth diapers instead)

Safety (when baby starts to crawl)

  • Gates for stairs and doors

  • Window guards if necessary

  • Cabinet catches

  • Plastic electric outlet covers

Other baby items

  • Baby carrier or baby front pack

  • Baby or infant car seat

  • Baby stroller or baby carriage

  • Diaper and accessories bag

  • Medicine dropper

  • Baby intercom or monitor (only necessary if you think you won't be able to hear your baby crying from where you sleep or from your living area/kitchen)

  • Cleaning powder or cleaning liquid for cloth diapers

How to Survive a Pregnant Mom and a Sassy Child

By Melinda Mcalindon

When I was pregnant with my third child, my girls were 2 and 3. We did everything. I was overly energetic and perhaps a little crazy from the hormones. I always tried to dress in non-pregnancy dresses, and, being quite petite, I always wore heels. Yes, even nine months pregnant, I had on shoes with 2" heels every day.

One Saturday, about 6 weeks before my due date, we needed to return a bed to the Pottery Barn Outlet. Unfortunately it was 1 hour way and the bed and the kids wouldn't fit in the SUV. So my husband and I took two cars and the kids to the outlet. Yes, I know the price of gas - it wasn't that bad then!

We had a summer great day. We ended up spending the entire day shopping and the kids were tolerating well. No one had naps, so they were getting a little tired. In my infinite mom-wisdom, I decided the best thing to do was to stop for an "blue-hair special" dinner on the way home (it was 4:30pm) and then put the kids straight to bed. My husband agreed and off we went.

We stopped about 15 minutes later at cute little place called Miss Mabel's. It was a sweet place, southern style cooking, and family friendly. It had a lovely outdoor seating area as well. At this time of day, it was packed with older customers, also wanting the "blue-hair special". We were seated and then the fun began.

The girls had been expending all their energy being good in the stores and in the car. Now, it was dinner time and they decided to relax. Meg, my oldest, stood up in the seat. Libby, my youngest, started crying because, well, that's just how she lets off steam. I promptly asked Meg to sit down. She did, and then stood back up.

Now, you don't know me, but remember the Captain from the Sound of Music? He uses the whistle to call the kids and the all line up. My husband won't let me have a whistle, but I love the discipline of the Captain! So you can imagine my surprise and ire when Meg stood back up. My husband gave me the look: do you really want to fight that battle? I returned with the "mom look" of back off.

And so it began. The downhill spiral of our dinner. Meg sat down after a couple of threats. The waitress came, we ordered and I thought all order had been restored. Clearly, the hormones were affecting my judgment.

Meg decided to play a few more games just to see how far mommy could be pushed today. She colored on sister's paper, she put her feet up in the hair and she tried being sassy. One last threat - the ultimate. The one all parents make and none want to do! I said, "if you do anything else, I will take you home immediately. No dinner - just bed!" Now, to any other child, this would have been the red flag, race over or the ding-ding of the match ending, but not to Meg. She, bless her heart, has my stubbornness, pride and ability to exasperate even those with the strongest of constitutions.

Meg decided to stand up one more time in the seat. I firmly and quietly said, "Sit. Down." The whole restaurant froze in fear, like a scene out of an old western, when she raised her voice saying, "NO!" My husband said, I'll handle this, but, she had waved a red flag in front a very pregnant "bull". I jumped up, grabbed her by the arm and took her outside, "to talk".

It was starting to get crowded now. The outdoor seating area was full and lots of people were waiting around near the door. I knelt down, holding Meg by the hips and started to give her a firm talk. She wasn't interested. Instead, she raised her hand and softly, but intentionally hit me on the shoulder; then, knowing the fate that awaited, started to run off.

Picture this: Hugely pregnant woman - ANGRY- running, in heels after a 3 year old who was screaming "no". Not my proudest moment. I grabbed her, held her up and said, confrontationally I admit, "Do you want to do that again?" She raised her hand, but the fury from my eyes must of caused her to capitulate. I took her inside, said goodbye to my husband and took off towards the car.

As you can imagine, Meg could not believe we were actually leaving before dinner. She started to balk. I picked her up, and she started kicking her legs. Having such a large belly, I could not carry a kicking child the way one normally does. I held her under my arm, like a foot ball, legs kicking, me stomping off in heels past all of the waiting patrons and the outdoor guests.

You would think my humiliation ended as we arrived at the car. No.

I put Meg in the car seat, got in the car and said, "not one word, Mommy is so angry, I cannot punish you now. We will talk about this at home (30 minutes away)." I knew she couldn't be quiet the whole way, but you'd think I could have make it out of the strip mall parking lot before the screaming began. She screamed, "No! Not fair! Take me back!" for what seemed like an hour, but realistically was only 1-2 minutes. That was all I could take.

I pulled into the nearest parking space at Best Buy; yes, we were still in that parking lot. I got out of the car, marched around to her side of the car, and got in. Coincidentally, the screaming abruptly stopped. I pulled her out of her seat, told her that her behavior was unacceptable and this screaming would not continue. She was to be spanked, sit in her seat and go to bed when we got home. I then flipped her over, gave her two firm pops on her bum, and returned her to her seat.

When I finally got back into my seat I was emotionally exhausted and physically out of breath (8 months pregnant, remember) . I took a deep breath and looked up to the heavens for wisdom and probably forgiveness. When what to my wandering eyes did appear on the lamp post, but a small video camera.

I dropped my head in horror, sure, that I was now going to be on the 6 o'clock news, "pregnant women, hormonal rage, beats child...." I called my husband, asking if he'd still love me if I was the "breaking news" on Channel 5. His first words were not "of course, honey" or " I'll always love you", but instead were "what did you do".

It does have a happy ending, I was not the headline, or even a sideline on the news. Meg was quiet the rest of the way home. And by the time we got into bed, she was contrite for her behavior, and we had time to snuggle and restore our relationship.
