Britax Car Safety Seats Review

By Terry Ross

Britax produces a wide range of car safety seats, has been in the industry for over 30 years and is an innovator and leader in the car safety seat market place.

If you are looking for your babys first car safety seat and want rear facing then the Britax Companion offers you everything you need. This rear facing baby car safety seat has a 5 point harness, is suitable for babies from 4 to 22 pounds and has a height limit of 30. When the Britax Companion first entered the market its side impact protection was revolutionary and since then the design of this car safety seat has only got better. The anti-rebound bar significantly reduces movement in the event of an accident, you can purchase extra bases for multi-car installation and the car safety seat is compatible with the new Britax Previes and Britax Forerunner strollers for a complete travel system.

In you are looking for a convertible car safety seat then the Britax Roundabout ticks all the boxes and is about the best on the market. The Britax Roundabout car safety seat is easy to install, safe but stylish and really comfortable for your baby. As with all Britax car safety seats the Roundabout comes with a five point harness. It is forward facing with a weight limit of 33 pounds, a height limit of 40, comes in seven different patterns and the fabric cover is machine washable. It has the new LATCH system and has EPS impact foam around the babys head and torso.

If you want a convertible car safety seat that has a higher weight limit have a look at the Britax Marathon. This car safety seat boasts all the same features as the Britax Roundabout but has a higher weight maximum (forward facing up to 65 pounds) and is suitable for babies up to 49. The Marathon will still fit in most cars but may prove too large to install rear facing in some smaller vehicles.

As with all Britax car safety seats the Britax Decathlon is built with safety and comfort in mind. The Decathlon, among many other features, has a 3-position crotch strap, patented HUGS harness system, push button release LATCH system, removable toddler pillow and an infant positioning system for newborn babies. The Decathlon car safety seat will provide good service to your baby from 5 65 pounds. The Britax Decathlon is certainly one of the best car safety seats on the market and should certainly be included in your short list.

The Britax Boulavard has head and torso safety wings to help protect your child in the event of an accident. Previous negative feedback about wings making it difficult to fasten a child into a car safety seat and only offering restrictive views to a child have been taken into account. The Britax Boulavard car safety seat wings come out at an angle making strapping in easy and enabling your child to look around while still affording that added impact protection.

This is not a definitive list of the car safety seats available from Britax but provides you with a good idea of the safety and comfort levels Britax car safety seats offer. Although Britax car safety seats arent the cheapest on the market they are certainly high up in the safety list and are well ahead in new innovative features.

When considering price, bear in mind that your childs car safety seat is one of the most important purchases you will ever make. Paying top prices isnt always necessary but dont skimp on safety features and, if you want to save money, then think about length of use rather than cheaper initial cost by going for a convertible car safety seat with a higher upper weight and height limit.

What Does a New Baby Need Anyway?

By Shirlene Moore

So... there's this cute little baby, & you have to buy some stuff...

The only problem - what the heck are you supposed to buy a new born? What do you really need when you're that age?

Well - it's funny - what you think they need, and what they really need are too completely different things.

My advice about items for babies:

Toys

Babies don't play with toys for at least 3 months (& some find paper bags far more interesting up until 12 months of age) - if you're going to buy toys, just buy something that is colourful & will hang above the babies cot, providing some enjoyment.

New-born clothes

Do you know how long a baby lasts in those? The average baby probably only needs about 5 sets of (really adorable) new born onesies (you know the little suits that cover them from neck to toe) - and, if "mum" has been really excited (or the baby has older siblings) - you can bet your bottom dollar, that she's already got 5.

If you are buying clothes for a gift - find out what the mother has, or buy some slightly older clothes - clothes that will fit a 3 month, or 6 month baby.

Blankets

Blankets are great - especially the polar fleece type ones (depending on where you live & how hot it gets - if too hot, substitute blankets for sheets).

If you have too many you can get really creative - put some holes in the blanket for the seatbelt & turn it into a car-seat blanket. Sew the edges of it together & make a cheap sleeping bag for when watching TV.

Make the blankets into panels - sew them together & make a quilt for when the baby gets older.

Diapers

Great - sure to be used. If you are giving diapers as a gift, first find out if the parents use disposables. If they are dead against diapers, you may be insulting them.

Flannels/Wipes

The one thing that I bought the least of, but used the most - baby flannels. These are awesome. You have no idea how many times (in the first few months) your sweet little baby is going to puke all over the place, poop all over the place, & just make a general mess!

Flannels are the best for at home (because you generally need something you can get really wet), and the wipes are fantastic for the car.

Car Seat

Of course this is essential - one word of advice - make sure you get a capsule one, that turns into a bigger seat.

You're better off renting a capsule (rather than buying one), because the baby isn't in it for long enough.

Radio

The soft singing (or talking) on a radio is sure to lull any baby off to sleep. If you can afford it, purchase one of the baby CD's - although most parents will find they don't need it, the radio does the perfect job!

Cot

Your best bet here is to buy a basinette/cot combo.
The basinette is higher than the cot, & the parent can move (or change) a sleeping baby with ease. You need to move the baby into the cost by the age of 3 months (by which time he is moving about too much & may fall out of the basinette). So, if you can buy a basinette that converts into a cot (& even better, a bed for later on) you've saved yourself a whole lot of money.

Stroller/Baby Carrier

This really depends on the baby.
I used to carry my baby around a lot, because he was quite unsettled - in which case a baby carrier (& one that's easy to use!! Try it out before you buy it) is the best item.
A stroller is great for settled babies - get one that you can move into the sleeping position for when your baby nods off (which is constantly for about the first 6 months).
When your baby gets older, a toddler stroller is fantastic - not only for when your little darling gets tired, it also keeps sticky hands from breaking everything thing in the shop!

Camera

You'll want a good camera (preferably a digital one), so you can take loads of photos of your sweetpea.

&... that's about it! If you are looking for some great products check out our baby products section of Grizzlynut.

Baby Strollers Tips and Advice

By Martin Smith

You have just learned that you are expecting a bundle of joy and now you need to begin getting the things your baby will need. If this is your first baby all the decisions you need to make may seem overwhelming at first.
One of the biggest purchases you will need to make is about the type of stroller you will use for your baby.

There are so many different types of strollers to choose from and one of the first things you need to do is determine your budget. There are strollers that can cost as little as $10.00 or as much as $400 and up. The lower end strollers are generally the very light weight umbrella strollers. The advantage to these strollers is the fold nicely and can store almost anywhere. As the price gets higher the features and quality of the stroller may increase.

Strollers can come with a variety of features. What is important to you? Do you want a convertible travel system or a stroller that is just that and a car seat? There are travel systems that include a stay in the car base, an infant carrier/car safety seat, and a stroller frame for the infant seat which it is attached. These are great especially when your baby is newly born.

Strollers have a play tray that has insets for a bottle or juice cup. Many have canopies with a vinyl window so you can keep an eye on the baby. The brake on most strollers now are attached to both rear wheels and is easily applied with your foot and some also have a wrist strap brake that is used in conjunction with the foot break. It gives extra safety when you are stopped and the stroller won't 'roll away' while you have the strap.

There is usually a large storage basket under the seat(s) of the strollers and many strollers now are coming with a parent tray that is place over the handle bar. It has a spot for a cup of coffee or a soda, a place for your cell phone, your keys and a place to hold a snack.

Handlebars are now height adjustable on most strollers and are reversible moving from either the front to back or vice versa. The height adjustable feature is a great saver on the back the reversible handle can help you see your baby while he rides if necessary.

The seat is the next consideration. Does the seat recline and if so will it recline enough so that your newborn can lie almost flat? Is the seat well padded and will it be comfortable for your baby? Is the seat padding removable for washing?

Most upper end strollers come with blankets that can attach to the seat with snaps. These blankets make your baby's stroller like a bunting on wheels. Rain hoods are also detachable and can be used to protect your baby from harsh sunlight and winds.

Here's another twist your decision about a baby stroller. Your friend has an almost brand new stroller that you can have for free. She agrees to have it cleaned and ready for you. Is a used baby stroller a safe choice for your baby? It can be a very good choice for you and your baby, however there are some things you really need to look over before you place your precious one in it.

The frame - there should be no dents, cracks, or gaps in the frame. All bolts and screws must be in place. Anything less could cause an accident and seriously hurt your baby. Are there sharp spots on the frame? Are there any screws loose or sticking out that could cut your baby? Is the handle bar joined properly to the frame?

The wheels - are they solid or do you need to look for leaks in air pressure in them? Are the wheels worn? Do they need replacing? Do the wheels turn, as they should? Are the axels straight? Does the brake operate properly; that is, do they hold when applied?

The seat - does the seat hold its position whether straight or in the reclining position? A seat that does not hold the position well could seriously injure your baby. Is the lining clean or does it fit the frame properly.

There are all kinds of options styles and types of strollers. There are multiple seat strollers for twins, or more children. There are a variety of seating arrangements side by side seating, tandem seating with one seat behind the other, and stadium seating (tandem seating with rear seat raised above the front) allowing the second child to be able to see more than the back of a head. There are jogging strollers (one wheel out in front and two rear wheels). The jogging strollers also come with multiple seating.

Used or new enjoy your outings with your baby or children.

Let's Go Shopping for a Baby Stroller

By Danny Wright

You just found out your pregnant and you are ready to go shopping. Since you are going to be an on the go mom a baby stroller might be one of the things you want to invest in first. There are so many choices out there in styles and colors that having a little bit of an idea what you want in a baby stroller before you go can be helpful. Otherwise you may go out shopping and be overwhelmed and end up spending too much money.

Looking at strollers online is usually a good way to start shopping. This way you are able to compare many different brands and prices in less time rather than driving all over town. More than likely if you are on the go all the time you are actually going to need more than one baby stroller in your baby's first three years of their life. The first baby stroller is a systems stroller.

It might sound funny to have a system for your baby stroller but by buying this type of stroller you will be saving money. This type of baby stroller will also be used as a car seat, a carrier and a baby stroller. This is 3 in 1 and saves a lot of money and time. You will not have to keep changing your baby in and out of car seats and carriers. This is less exposure to the baby and the weather as well. These baby strollers come in many shapes, sizes and designs to match whatever baby theme you have chosen, but as your baby grows so does their needs in baby strollers.

As your baby grows they will eventually need a bigger car seat, baby stroller and there will be no need for a carrier. Time to upgrade to a full size baby stroller, but again there are many choices to fit your life style. First things first though it will matter just how many babies you are having. If you are having twins the more you will have to have a baby stroller designed for the amount of children you are having. Also if you have an infant already and need a baby stroller for the older child as well as the infant, then you will need to choose a stroller that will work for both children. These are some of the first things that will help you narrow down your choices for your next baby stroller.

Good luck on your shopping spree for your new baby stroller. There is every design, style and color that you need to fit into your lifestyle. Your baby will be ready to go out in style with you in their new baby stroller.

Preparing for New Baby or Traveling with Baby this Summer

By Sharon Mullen

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children in the United States. In 2003, 1,591 children ages 14 years and younger died as occupants in motor vehicle crashes and approximately 220,000 were injured. Thats an average of four deaths and more than 600 injuries each day. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if babies were properly restrained. Inventive Parent (www.inventiveparent.com), a premiere online parenting resource and a provider of solutions invented by real moms and dads, is pleased to announce important baby passenger safety information. Designed to eliminate the confusion around rear-facing car seats and when or what type of car seat baby needs to be in, this is information parents should know whether preparing for new baby or traveling with baby this summer.

Types of Car Seats

There are two types of car seats for babies under one year old infant seat/carrier combinations and convertible car seats. Infant Seat/Carriers are designed for newborn babies through 20 or 22 pounds. They are designed to move in and out of the car. Some have bases that remain attached to the cars seat, others are buckled in and out and some have padded, crooked handles, or a stroller base.

Convertible car seats let you use the same seat from the day your baby is born through forty pounds. They will have both a rear-facing and forward-facing weight limit. The rear-facing limit may be as high as 30-35 pounds. They may have removable inserts that effectively make the seat smaller to fit an infant. This car seat is installed once, and stays put.

Compare the seats first for safety, then look at the added features. Pay careful attention to the weight limits on your seat. The seat will not protect your baby once he or she is bigger than the designated weight limit. If your baby is long and lean, watch where his head rests on the seat back. The entire head should be below the top of the seat. If he is sneaking up past the top, it is time to move to a convertible seat.

Rear-Facing

Many parents feel uncomfortable about having baby face the rear because they cant see baby, baby cant see scenery or where the car is traveling or baby is too far away. However, there is logical reasoning behind the requirement for babies to be in rear-facing car seats. During their first year, babies neck muscles are not strong enough to support their heads unassisted. A rear-facing seat holds baby at a more reclined position than a forward facing seat. Cars move quickly, zig and zag, stop fast, run through holes and hit bumps. It takes considerable strength to counter all those movements. Your baby is never prepared for those sudden movements. If your baby weighs 20 or more pounds before his first birthday, you should be using a convertible seat in the rear-facing position. Speak with your pediatrician about the best time to turn your baby around; all babies are different and have different needs. Some safety experts, postulating that mild Shaken Baby Syndrome may be suffered through months of accumulated shakes from unsupported motion in a baby carrier, bike seat or forward-facing car seat, would like to keep children rear facing through 18-24 months.

Tips for Using a Rear-Facing Car Seat

ท Read and follow the instructions that came with your seat and with your car.

ท Make sure the seat is firmly attached to your car.

ท Fit harness straps through the seat below babys shoulders so that the straps run up and over the shoulders.

ท Keep the straps snug. If you can pinch the edges of a strap together between your fingers, the straps are too loose.

ท Do not put heavy clothing, jackets, blankets or sweaters on your baby because this bulk keeps the straps from fitting snugly. Your baby could scoot around under the straps just like a hand inside a mitten--not very secure in case of an emergency.

ท Place blankets over the straps, not under them.

ท Make sure the straps are level, even and not twisted.

ท Do not cover your babys face.

ท Place the chest clip level and in line with babys armpits.

ท Never place a car seat in front of an active air bag.

ท For more information on installing your rear-facing car seat, visit http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/.

Based on research and Car Seat Checks performed by Safe Kids, 85% of car seats are misused, with an average of two mistakes per seat. The most common are that the seat belt does not hold the seat tightly (63%) and that the straps are not snug (33%). Even if you made it through your first or second childs infancy without incident, take some time to make sure that your new baby is safe in her seat.

In addition, the United States and Canadian governments have written car seat regulations and laws which parents should be mindful of, not only just for their home state, but when traveling through other states. Inventive Parent has compiled laws in one easy-to-use location at http://www.inventiveparent.com/state-laws.htm. It is recommended that you take the advice of the most stringent state's regulations, and consider your own state's rules as a minimum requirement.

Make Rear-Facing Travel Easier and Safer
Parental distraction resulting from fussy children, finding toys or snacks, and talking on cell phones is a leading cause of accidents. By being able to see children in the back, being organized and having toys and food at childrens disposal, parents can significantly minimize the risk of harm to their children. Luckily, there are a number of products that can help make rear-facing travel safer and easier.

ท Auto Mobile, for babies up to 18 months, prevents fishing in the back seat and floor for lost toys. In just one step, parents can press the mobile to the car's ceiling. The patterns, bright colors and expressive characters hold baby's interest minimizing distracting fussiness.

ท Bear-View Infant Mirror allows the driver or passenger to safely keep an eye on baby while driving. This plush Teddy Bear provides the widest view of infant available so that parents can enjoy peace of mind while entertaining baby.

ท The Original Car Seat Cozy is a 200 weight fleece blanket that attaches with Velcro to child's seat so that parents can ensure baby is warm all the time without having to search for fallen blankets. Unique design prevents falling or dragging and covers shoulders without choking or letting drafts in.

ท The Taby Tray on-the-go entertainment center attaches to seat with strap and hook to hold snacks, drinks, books, toys, etc. and the easy reach recessed cup or bottle holder prevents distracting spills.

ท Designed for children ages one to five, the Snack-Trap Toddler Snack Cup allows little hands in and out for gathering snacks, but keeps snacks from spilling when the cup is turned over, knocked, dropped, or thrown.

ท The Bottle Bungee, keeps child's bottle from hitting the car floor, helping to keep children happy and preventing frustration while keeping germs off the bottles.

All of these products are available through www.inventiveparent.com.

Sharon Mullen is a parenting expert, mom and President & CEO of Inventive Parent (http://www.inventiveparent.com) which she started when she invented her own product, the Original Car Seat Cozy, after finding that attachable blankets did not exist for baby carriers and car seats for children over one years old. Later, after she recognized the lack of products and availability to solve parents real-world challenges, she started Inventive Parent, a provider of over 200 parent-invented solutions for maternity through pre-teen and an online parenting resource. Baby's First Travel Experience Without a Baby Stroller

By Yuri K

Traveling with a newborn is a fresh experience for new parents. A short or long trip is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy quality time with your newborn. Travel with a baby can be a challenge but with some careful planning and preparation, it will become restful and fun. The babys first trip requires you to take a lot of necessities into the carry on. Whether your trip is by car, plane, or train, basic items are the same. Newborns need a lot of changing, feeding, and sleeping time. Plan your trip around the babys schedule and make sure the baby is fed and changed before you go on your trip.

Basic Travel Tips

Plan ahead is a good way to start your babys first travel experience. Start your trip early and leave early and give yourself plenty of time for those extra stops you will be doing. If you want to sightsee in the morning, then relax in the afternoon. Try and stay, as close to the babys schedule as possible. Pick a hotel, or lodging that accepts babies and children. Ask the manager to have a crib placed in your room before you arrive.

If you are traveling by car, stop often to change or feed the baby and take rest stops for yourself. Stretch your legs, get gas, or snacks to munch on during the trip. If you are traveling by plane, consider buying an extra ticket for your baby. It will be the babys own seat for a safer and comfortable ride for you and your newborn. If you are traveling by public transport, whether it is by train, bus or taxi, always bring along a car seat. The car seat will provide protection for your newborn.

Travel Necessities for Baby

A parent should have a baby travel check list handy for any trip. It is not a good feeling to realize that you are missing baby wipes or you need more diapers and then, you have to go and stop at the next available place to buy them. What a hassle! If you have a list, you can check off the items as you pack them and then you wont have to make an extra stop.

The basic essential items, for the baby, are what you need for the trip, no matter where you go, or whom you will visit. Once you get there, you can always replenish what you need. Some basic necessities you will need are a bag of diapers, ointment, in case of diaper rash, wipes, baby lotion, formula, a baby blanket in case you find a spot along the way such as the park, motel, or airport where you can offer your baby a place to lay down for a while, extra clothes for you and the baby, a car seat, lightweight baby stroller such as the Graco Metrolite Stroller.

Whether you are planning a short or long trip, dont get caught without your babys travel bag of necessities. Keep your travel check list in a handy location where you will always find it and you and the baby will have a pleasant, happy, fun babys first travel experience.

Seven Things You Need For Baby's Arrival

By Maria Schasteen

You are prepared for babys arrival. But here is a checklist to make sure you havent forgotten anything.

To bring your baby home, youll need:

  1. Diapers, baby clothes including baby jacket and baby cap, baby blanket
  2. A baby carrier for a safe transport
  3. For the car youll need a baby-safe baby carrier equipment (car seat) for safe driving. Never place the baby carrier on the front seat. Never underestimate the necessity of baby driving safety! Put a sticker on the car: Baby on board.

    When you arrive at home, youll need:

  4. A baby crib with bedding
  5. Plenty of diapers, baby washcloths, baby towels, baby blanket

    For babys first bath, youll need:

  6. Baby shampoo, baby soap, baby lotion, KidScents Tender Tush for babys delicate bottom. Dont use talk powder - its carcinogenic. Dont use regular baby bath gel and shampoo it contains sodium lauryl sulphate and propylene glycol which are known carcinogens! Use only baby products you trust, e.g., Young Livings KidScents line of gentle and safe baby products that smells exceptionally good.

    When it is feeding time, youll need:

  7. A cosy armchair with foot rest for breastfeeding. There is a special pillow available to cradle baby while breastfeeding. Have some cotton diapers handy. After breastfeeding have a breast pump handy. Have your changing table prepared.

Other important considerations:

When you wash your baby clothes, cotton diapers and towels make sure to use a natural detergent and no chemical softener. Your babys skin is so delicate, it may react to harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Instead use a mild detergent (a capful of Thieves Household Cleaner may be used) and/or a therapeutic-grade essential oil like lavender, grapefruit or chamomile to make your laundry smell great.

Dry babys clothes as often as possible outside in the sun. Then iron. Sun and heat from the iron may kill unwanted bacteria in clothes. You can add an essential oil to the steam iron to naturally scent your babys clothes.

Remember scents go to the memory center of the brain. They will embed a feeling of calm, happiness and protection felt in moms arms. Years later, even at old age, smelling this scent will instil the same feeling of calm, happiness and protection, and a memory of childhood will bring a smile to the lips.

You can make your babys experience pleasant and secure, starting at birth and all throughout childhood. A happy childhood lets your baby grow up confident. Essential oils will greatly support babys well-being.

The Seven Things You Need For Babys Arrival are:

(1) Diaper, baby clothes and blanket,

(2) a baby carrier,

(3) a safety baby car seat to bring the baby home,

(4) the crib and bedding,

(5) diapers, baby clothes, towels, washcloths and blanket,

(6) all natural baby soap, baby shampoo, and baby lotion, and

(7) an armchair and foot rest for breastfeeding, a changing table and uplifting essential oils for babys wellness.

Welcome home, little baby!

Baby Strollers - A Safe Carriage for Babies

By Jayson Pablo

A baby stroller or a buggy is a popular baby transport. It is generally used to carry a child of up to 3 years of age. In a stroller, the child sits in a manner that she or he does not faces the pusher. A perambulator or pram is used to carry new born babies. It has the infant lying down in it, facing the pusher. Prams were first used in the UK during the Victorian period. Later, a suspension mechanism was added to the baby carriage that made ride smooth both for the child and the parents.

A baby stroller is comparatively smaller in size and also costs less than a pram. A more compact form of buggy, called Pushchair was released in the UK during early 1980s. The carriage became an instant hit among the Britishers as it was made of a collapsible aluminum frame. A variety of strollers are also available in the markets that are used to carry twin babies or two babies of similar age.

Travel systems are the latest evolution of baby strollers. They typically consist of a chassis with a detachable carrycot or baby seat. It can be conveniently switched between a pram and a pushchair as per needs. Its baby seat allows undisturbed movement of the baby on to a car seat. It thus considerably reduces the chances of inadvertently waking up a sleeping baby while one moves her or him to a car seat. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) has categorized car seats into five mass groups. While the Group 0 seat can carry children of up to 10 kg, the Group 1 seats can carry children weighing 9 to 18 kg.

The latest versions of baby strollers are light weight and come equipped with swivel wheels for easy maneuvering. A number of retailers in the UK also sell buggies that can be customized according to the needs of the baby and the parents. Current strollers feature a number of baby safety designs like sun rider canopies, easy step-in rear stadium style seating and drink holders.

Baby Furniture Buyers Guide

By Randy Wilson

Communication between the guests would be wise to prevent any duplicate gifts. The guests could also choose to get together on something more expensive such as a piece of nursery furniture. The parents need items that will hold up well for their newborn, so check to make certain the item you choose is sturdy and built for safety.

Purchasing an expensive gift such as a piece of furniture for the nursery would help the new parents tremendously as they are probably strapped for cash at this point. What with the pre-natel care and the upcoming hospital and doctor expenses that come with any childbirth.

Baby Cribs
Cribs will be the most important piece of furniture the new parent will need for the baby. They come in a wide variety of styles and finishes to match any nursery theme or color scheme the parents might have for the nursery. They come as standard cribs, canopy, convertible, sleigh and various other types. Some of the more common features available would be adjustable mattress heights, metal mattress supports, one of three different kinds of release mechanism, rolling casters and/or a teething rail. A baby can use the crib from birth until around the age of 3. A safe and sturdy crib will cost from $150 to over $1000 depending on the quality of the wood and the features provided.

Crib Mattresses
A crib mattress is a very important item for the baby as she/he will be spending over 50% of his time on the mattress until he/she is around 3 years of age. Mattresses come in basically two types: foam or innerspring/coil. Foam weighs less while the innerspring/coil will last a much longer time. Accessories include bedding, crib sheets, crib wedges and waterproof mattress pads. High quality foam mattresses will cost between $80 to $100, while an innerspring/coil mattress will cost from $75 to $200.

Bedding-Bumpers-Sheets-Quilts-Shams
Most standard, canopy and convertible cribs will use standard size crib bedding. A round crib, porta crib, cradle and bassinet will all need special bedding to fit the size of the particular item. A bumper is a necessary item that is needed to keep the baby safe by keeping the baby's arms and legs from getting stuck in the slats. A quilt or comforter should not be used in the crib, but rather as a play mat for the baby. A diaper stacker is used to store your diapers and to keep the nursery more organized. Pillows are a safety hazard for the baby and should never be used in the crib. Most bedding sets can cost from $50 to as high as $700 for a set with better quality fabrics etc.

Changing Tables
A changing table should be well padded, have guardrails and include safety straps for the baby. They come in several types such as the combination sytle, dresser drawer and one with open shelves. Accessories include changing pads, oraganizers and wipe warmers. A changing table can be used from birth until about two years of age. They range in price from $90 to $200 depending on the accessories and storage space they have.

Rocking Chairs
A rocking chair would be a welcome addition to the baby nursery or living room. The rocking chair would give the mom-to-be lots of quality time with her newborn baby.

Moses Baskets
Moses baskets are a rather unique piece of furniture. A moses basket would be an unexpected but welcome baby shower gift. Also something the mother could pass on for a heirloom. This is an item that could be passed from generation to generation.

Child's Rocking Chair
A children's rocking chair would make a great gift. One that most people wouldn't think of giving. You wouldn't need to worry about duplicating your gift with some other guest with this gift.

Playpen & Play Yard
Play yards come in 3 different types. The basic which can be used as a playpen or a crib. One that has a bassinet built in for the newborn. A canopy style to keep you infant shielded from the sun and to keep in cooler in the outdoors. Accessories you can purchase seperately include a changing station, netting for outdoor use and sheets. A play yard can be used from birth until about 2 years of age. Good quality play yards cost between $60 to more than $200.

Portable Travel Crib
A portable travel crib would be great for those over-night trips out of town or state to family or friends.

Cradles
A cradle is used from birth until 4 months or the baby is able to roll from side to side. Cradles usually include a padded bumper, fitted sheet and a quilt or comforter. One of the advantages of a cradle is that you can rock it and it is lower than a crib.

Baby Dresser
Every nursery needs a chest of drawers for the newborn. You can buy them with a theme, in different styles, shapes and colors. If you know how the new parents will be decorating the nursery, you can match the baby dresser to the theme.

High Chair
All new parents need this very essential piece of furniture. There are several types of high chairs: Adjustable, conventional, booster and wooden. The high chair should have an adjustable tray, locking mechanism, some kind of restraint system and possibly rolling casters which are allowed to be locked easily. Parents can use the high chair as soon as the baby is born for bottle feeding if it is capable of fully reclining.

Bassinets
A traditional piece of nursery furniture would be a bassinet. The baby can use the bassinet from birth until about 4 month of age. Bassinet sets usually include a hood cover, fitted sheet, plain sheet and a bumper.

Car Seats
A car seat is a necessity because every state requires the baby be restrained while in a car. Newborns must travel in the back seat in a car seat that faces the rear of the car. After the baby is a year old you change to a forward facing car seat. Car seats come in several different types. An infant car seat, convertible and booster seats. Infant and convertible car seats cost between $60 and $300.

Strollers
Strollers come as a standard stroller, single, umbrella, double strooler or as a travel system which is a combination stroller and car seat. Most strollers have a canopy, front bar, harness, reliner and a storage space. Accessories available include accessory bars, attachable toy and activity bars, infant headrests, rain sheilds and stroller connectors for attaching two strollers together. A stroller can be used from around 4 months of age until about 3 or 4 years old. Depending on the style and quality strollers can be purchased for as little as $15 to as much as $1,000.

Baby Monitor
A monitor may be a luxery item, but it can give the parents added reassurance that their baby is safe. There are several types: audio, audio/movement and audio/video monitors. Monitors can be used from newborn to toddler. Depending on the type of monitor, you can buy them for as little as $20 on up to $400, with the audio/video monitor being the most expensive.

Bouncer Seat
A very useful item is a bouncer seat. They can come with an accessory toy bar, canopy, restraint and variable speeds. A bouncer seat can be used from newborn until the baby is 9 months old. The standard non-battery operated bouncer seats cost between $40 and $75 while the battery operated seats tend to cost a bit more.

Buying for Baby

By Michelle Higgins

Well, what else can be as exciting for proud parents-to-be than the first glimpse of their bundle of joy? Shopping for baby of course. Here is some help to start your baby-shopping adventure.

Buy a car safety seat. It's the law!

You need to buy an approved car safety seat before your baby arrives. Your precious newborn has to be safe and cozy on his first car ride from the hospital to home. Some hospitals insist on you purchasing a car seat before they let you take baby home.

Shop for a soft-padded, rear-facing infant car seat to hold him snug and secure and support his back and neck. You can also go in for a lightweight one that can double up as a carrier or a rocker.

Buy an uncomplicated system with a permanent base in which the seat effortlessly snaps in and out, so that you don't have to refer to the manual every time you use it. If you are not confident about safely installing one, seek professional help.

Baby's Layette

Babies are not always born on days with the best weather. Be prepared with a basic layette for any kind of weather. Thankfully, babies cannot recognize designer wear, so it is easy to stick to your budget.

Opt for soft, absorbent clothes that can be machine-washed and dried. For cold winter months, buy long sleeve undershirts, stretchies, sweaters and pajamas with built in feet. Stock a few mittens, socks, warm woolen blankets and snug hats for outings. Buy a soft woolen sleeper to keep baby warm and cozy at bedtime.

For the summer months, you need short sleeved or sleeveless suits, hats or bonnets to protect baby from the sun and light cotton blankets.

There's more to buy

The list includes a baby crib and mattress, crib sheets, nappies/ disposable diapers, baby wipes, a baby bathtub, mild bath soap, soft towels, a sling to carry your baby and a few toys. Choose the right toys for your newborn so that they do what they are meant to- stimulate her and provide entertainment.

Tips for happy shopping

Start shopping for baby 2-3 months before you are due or earlier if you anticipate bed rest in late pregnancy. If this is your first baby, shop with a close friend or relative for helpful advice.

Dads-to-be can get involved in shopping for baby to get a feel of their impending responsibilities. A better and less tiring option is to split the list, especially if you always disagree with each other's taste.Go by your list, not the store's. A designer wardrobe might look appealing; but your little one will outgrow her clothes quickly.

Don't let the buying overburden you, savor and cherish each moment as you imagine a new life soon snuggle in all those cute outfits!

There is nothing more comforting than being prepared for your baby's arrival. After the marathon of childbirth, the last thing you want is frantic shopping trips.

Baby Stuff You Will Need After Getting Home

By Terry Edwards

If this is your first pregnancy then you might be wondering about all of the baby stuff you'll need to have on hand when you're baby comes home. It can certainly be confusing in many cases. Here are some of the basic things you'll want to have.

Car Seat - This is necessary or you won't even be able to leave the hospital. Your best bet here is to buy a baby car seat that is brand new. I don't recommend buying one used unless you know the person who had it before. Even then, this is just something you should purchase new if at all possible.

Bassinet - A bassinet comes in very handy throughout the day and night. Your baby can sleep right next to you without having to be put in their crib. I used one every day for both of our children.

Baby Crib - Having a place to sleep is a must for every baby. The type and style is strictly a matter of personal choice. For those on a tight budget you can find some great deals on used cribs from garage sales, newspaper, or even family and friends.

Baby Stroller - If you plan on going shopping or anywhere that requires walking, having a baby stroller will make your life much easier. Today's strollers come with car seats and baby carriers as well, making things much more convenient.

Miscellaneous - Of course, you will need plenty of diapers and baby wipes. You'll also need several baby blankets, bottles, baby oil, hairbrush, nail clippers, thermometer and wash cloths.

Needless to say you are going to need plenty of baby clothes and formula if you are bottle feeding.

This is most of the basic baby stuff you will need right away. Of course, if you have a bigger budget, you can find so much more to purchase for your baby.

Car Safety Seat Tips

By Terry Ross

Although some car safety seats are considered safer than others its a good point to note that all car safety seats must pass the same federal crash tests before being approved for sale in the U.S.

There are many car safety seats on the market with manufacturers adding little extra features in order to try and make their car safety seats better than their competitors but the one main factor that consumers need to be aware of is that if a car safety seat is not fitted correctly and in accordance with manufacturers instructions the car seats safety is impaired.

When looking for a car safety seat do not make your decision based on price and price alone. Higher priced car safety seats may have added features but such features wont necessarily make the car safety seat safer or easier to use.

If a car safety seat doesnt fit your car well dont use it and never resort to car safety seat accessories to try and make a safety seat fit your car. Manufacturers provide everything you need to correctly fit the car safety seat you are buying, if you need accessories the likelihood is that you have either fitted the seat incorrectly or that the car seat is not suitable for your car.

Ten Car Safety Seat Tips:

1. All car safety seats have weight limits which must be adhered to. Failure to follow weight / size limits can put your baby / child at risk.

2. Always use a rear facing car safety seat for infants under 1 year of age.

3. Never place a rear-facing car safety seat in the front seat of a car that has a passenger air bag.

4. With each new car safety seat read the manufacturers instructions carefully to ensure that the safety seat is correctly fitted at all times.

5. Always make sure your infants car safety seat is fitted securely.

6. Always double check that your baby is strapped into their car safety seat correctly.

7. Never place blankets under your baby before fastening the car safety seat straps. Blankets or similar items could become dislodged with the end result being that your baby is no longer strapped in tightly.

8. Avoid second hand car safety seats unless you know the person you are buying it from, are sure it hasnt been dropped or anything else has happened which might have weakened the seat and it still comes with manufacturers instructions.

9. Avoid fitting car safety seats next to side air bags. Always follow the car safety seat fitting instructions as provided by your cars manufacturer.

10. If using the same car safety seat for your second or subsequent child check the manufacturers guidelines. Some manufacturers dont recommend that you use their car safety seats beyond 5-6 years from the date of manufacture.

One final warning, never leave your child unattended in their car safety seat either in or out of the car. Leaving an infant in a car safety seat that is not secured can prove dangerous and leaving your infant unattended in a car can result in accidents such death from heat stroke, infants being jammed in electric windows and toddlers letting handbrakes off.

Keeping Baby Safe: Your Most Important Role As A Parent

By Claire Bowes

Saying Thanks, But No Thanks to Used Safety Equipment

Once your beautiful bundle of joy arrives, the work of raising your child really begins. The biggest job you have as a parent is keeping your baby safe. Yet, it is impossible to watch over your children twenty-four hours a day.

Thankfully, there are many safety products available to keep them from getting hurt. These products include safety gates, outlet covers, oven and table bumpers, doorknob covers, bed rails, locks and guards, and many more. As a parent, you need to use products that are one step ahead of their children's abilities, and can do so by getting down on their level and looking around. This gives you a child's eye perspective of child safety issues in your home.

But with so many products to buy and so many different brand names, how do you decide what products you need most? The best thing to do when it comes to safety is buy new products rather than used ones. An older, used product may have been recalled due to dangerous safety issues, or it may be damaged from previous use. Although hand-me-downs are great for clothes and toys, your childs safety is just too important to leave to chance. Babies R Us is a great place to find all the safety products you need.

That still leaves the issue of how to choose between one safety gate, for instance, and another. Here are some purchasing tips for some of the more popular safety items you will need for your baby.

Car Seats

More children are seriously injured and killed in auto accidents than in any other type of accident. Each year, hundreds of lives could be saved if children were protected in cars by using child safety seats. Using a child safety seat is the best protection you can give your child when traveling by car.

When purchasing a car seat, look for:

  • Label states that it meets or exceeds the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards;

  • Is the car seat appropriate for your child's height and weight?

  • Be aware of the type of seat belts your car has; all car seats are not compatible with all seat belts;

  • Check recent car seat recalls before making a purchase;

  • Be sure that the seat you choose fits your child - a smaller baby can slip out of a seat that's too large. Infants one year or younger and up to 20 pounds must be placed in a rear-facing seat, toddlers (older than 1 year and between 20 and 40 pounds) may use a forward-facing seat, and children who are between 40 and 80 pounds need to be placed in a booster seat;

  • Consider choosing a seat that is upholstered in fabric - it may be more comfortable for your child.

Safety Gates

Baby safety gates are an essential element in making your home baby proof. Now that he's on the move, every nook and cranny is a potential area of exploration for him. Your baby is curious about his new environment, wanting to investigate each little corner and new room. The best way to make sure he can't do any harm to himself is to install safety gates. These will prevent him from reaching the stairs, kitchen, or an office room, where there might be many wires and electrical equipment just at his height

Accordion gates, which open to form diamond-shaped patterns with wide V's at the top, can trap a baby's head and have resulted in strangulation deaths. In January 1985, gate manufacturers halted production of these gates, but there are still an estimated 15 million gates in use. Mesh gates also can be dangerous because a toddler's fingers can become trapped.

When purchasing a safety gate, look for the following:

  • A hardware-mounted gate that attaches to the doorframe without any openings to trap fingers or necks. Pressure-mounted gates should not be used between rooms of different levels or at the top of stairs; children can dislodge them and take a tumble.

  • Gates that swing out should never be used at the top of stairways;

  • Nonflexible vertical slats or rods should be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart;

  • Check for sharp edges and protrusions that could hurt a toddler's hands;

  • Avoid gates with structures that could give a child a foothold for climbing. Keep large toys away from the gate to prevent a child from using them to climb over;

  • The gate should be no less than 3/4 of the child's height

Playpens

These high-sided, enclosed play areas are popular because they allow parents to put their baby down with the knowledge that he can't wander off. It is great when you have to answer the phone, do a bit of ironing, or just catch a quick breath!

When purchasing a playpen, look for the following:

  • Holes in the mesh should be no larger than 1/4 inch to keep small fingers from getting caught;

  • The sides should be at least 20 inches high, measured from the floor of the playpen;

  • Look for padding on the tops of the rails to protect your baby from bumps;

  • The locks that allow you to lower a side should be out of your baby's reach.

Baby Monitors

The idea behind a baby monitor is that you can have the ability to move around the house or your yard and still be able to keep tabs on your baby by listening or now viewing your baby. This can help alert you to a crying baby, a baby who needs your help or just help you watch baby while he or she sleeps.

The baby/nursery monitor that you buy will have different levels of mobility. The base usually plugs into the wall, usually the nursery or wherever your baby is sleeping. The receiver can plug in or be mobile. If you intend to use the monitor as you move from room to room, you will want to invest in the mobile kind, versus the stationary variety.

When purchasing a baby monitor, look for the following:

  • There should be at least two channels to choose from;

  • Be sure that you have a low battery indicator light. Without this you might be listening to the receiver, thinking all is quiet in the baby's room, when in fact all you've got is a dead battery;

  • Has a power-on light so that you can know the unit is on without disturbing the baby;

  • Has a volume control to put you in charge of how loudly you wish to hear your baby;

  • Are you planning to carry around your end of the monitoring system? Then you might want a belt clip!

Bath Seats

A bath seat gives your child added support while in the bathtub and can help prevent a soapy baby from slipping out of your hands and hitting her head on the tub. Keep in mind, however, that you should NEVER leave your child unattended in the tub!

When purchasing a bath seat, look for the following:

  • Never use a bath seat on textured or non-skid surfaces unless the manufacturers instructions specifically state the seat is intended for such surfaces;

  • Look for the JPMA Certification Seal.

Always remember, no matter what safety product you are buying, to look at the features to be sure they meet your specific requirements. Also check to be sure that the product you are considering has not recently been recalled. The safety of your child is of utmost importance dont leave it to chance!

Those who are eager to go further can buy a whole pink set usually consisting of seat covers, mats and seat belt pads.

If the above is not exactly to your taste but still want to show it's a girl's car get a ingle car accessory in pink such as a pink disk holder.

To create comfort for your baby.

If you are one of those parents who often travel with their babies buy a seat cover in pink for the baby chair. Babies love pink moreover pink suits babies very well. Winter driving need not be as uncomfortable if you have the right kind of heated car seats. By keeping your back warm and helping regulate your cars interior temperature, heated car seats can help you go for miles and miles of truly leisurely driving.

If you live in places where winter is painfully cold, then you need heated car seats. Heated car seats can do a lot for your health and safety it warms your body directly, for one thing, which means you can stay alert for the long haul.

With a heated car seat, you dont have to turn up your cars heating system just to be warm, so your interior temperature is always regulated and at its optimum. Because heated car-seat technology is now perfected, you never have to worry about overheating. Gone are the first-generation heated car seats that were always too warm now you can enjoy just the right toasty feeling even when you drive for long hours.

If you intend to buy a new car, go for the ones that have built-in heated car seats. If you intend to keep your car and just replace the seats, you can easily buy heated car seats as separate accessories and have them professionally installed (some heated car-seat vendors provide expert installation free of charge). The catch? They can be expensive.

Most high-end cars come with heated car seats, but for people not ready to spend a good amount of money, there are other alternatives. A heated blanket is one such substitute. Heated blankets designed for cars can be plugged very easily into the cigarette-lighter socket it gives the same effect as a heated seat, but is a lot cheaper (they typically go for less than $100). If youre not ready to splurge on heated car seats, then this is definitely a sensible option.

Child Safety Seat Ratings - Are You Using Them Correctly To Help You Protect Your Child?

By Lyle Douglass

What Are Child Safety Seat Ratings

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is responsible for child safety seat ratings. The purpose of the ratings is two fold:

  • To help consumers make educated decisions when buying safety seats for children.
  • To help manufacturers be aware of those aspects of their product which should be improved.

The NHTSA inspects and evaluates safety seats for their ease of use and for their ease of installation. They grade them on each of the following categories:

  • Whether the safety seat is pre-assembled or requires assembly after purchase.
  • The clarity of the labeling attached to the safety seat.
  • The clarity of the written instructions explaining the proper use of the safety seat.
  • The ease with which a child can correctly be secured in the safety seat.
  • Whether the safety seat has features that make it easy to correctly install in a vehicle.

Each category is assessed a letter grade, A, B, or C. Just like a school report card. An overall grade for the safety seat is determined based upon the letter grades for each category. These ratings are applicable for child safety seats sold within the USA and Canada.

NHTSA safety seat ratings are not safety performance ratings. Seats are not crash tested. Ease of Use ratings do not imply some child safety seats are safer than others. The ratings only indicate which safety seats are easier to install and easier to use.

This may not seem like useful information but it is. Proper installation and proper use are the most critical factors for ensuring the safety of your infant or child while in a safety seat. Seats which are difficult to install or difficult to use may cause you to install them incorrectly or secure your child incorrectly resulting in injury or worse during a crash. When you select a safety seat which is easy to install and easy to use you will greatly improve its ability to protect your child during a vehicle collision.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has evaluated and rated most child safety seats available to consumers. The complete list of safety seat ratings is available online at their website. See the resource list at the end of this article for direct link access.

How To Use The Ratings

The NHTSA ratings are grouped by safety seat type:

  • Infant - These are infant carrier type safety seats.
  • Combination - These are safety seats which can be used as an infant car seat, then as a child car seat, and finally as a booster seat. Ratings are provided for each seat for each type of use. That is, a particular safety seat will be rated 3 times: when it is used as an infant seat, when it is used as child car seat and when it is used as a booster seat.
  • Convertible - These are safety seats that can be used as an infant car seat and then as a child car seat. They cannot be used as a booster seat. Ratings are provided for each seat for each type of use.
  • Forward Facing - These are safety seats that can only be used as a child car seat. They cannot be used as an infant car seat or as a booster seat.

Note: The 2005 NHTSA ratings had a link for a style called Forward Facing Only - but did not list any seats. Inclusion of this link may be a typo by the writer of the NHTSA ratings web page.

Since there are only three grade levels you will find many safety seats with the same overall Ease of Use rating. To help you narrow down your choices you might look at the ratings for the individual categories.

For example, if you expect to frequently transfer the safety seat between different vehicles you should consider the ratings for the Installing Features category. If you intend for the safety seat to only be in one vehicle then the Installing Features category is not so important. If you frequently have to put your child into a safety seat then the category about Securing the Child should be a strong consideration.

They Wont Work If You Dont Use Them

In America today, 98 percent of infants under age 1 and 89 percent of children ages 1 to 4 are now regularly restrained. Far too many children ages 4 to 8, however, are not properly restrained. Fewer than 20 percent of those 4 to 8 who should use a booster seat actually do use one.

Remember, a child safety seat will not work if your child does not use it. Children rely on you as parents and caregivers for their safety. Please ensure seats are installed and used correctly. A highly rated safety seat will be easier for you to install correctly and will make it easier for you to secure your child correctly. This helps you provide the best protection for your child. All states have laws requiring children to be restrained while in a motor vehicle. Know the laws for your state.

Car Seat Safety

By Ken White

Let me start by saying that I was a certified technician for child restraint systems for six years. During that time I personally inspected approximately six thousand car seats. Ive inspected everything from infant carriers to booster units for bigger kids. I guess you could say that qualifies me as an expert.

Every one of those seats came with a parent. Parents are people and as we all know, some people will do it right and read the instructions. They even seek out professionals to inspect and teach them. Then there are parents that look at a seat and think how hard can this be; its just a car seat, and in it goes. They will even invent ways to secure it. Believe me, they can get very imaginative.

You should purchase your seat at least one month ahead of the birth. See a professional certified technician and learn to use your equipment so every ride is a safe ride.

Every seat meets a federal standard, so have no fear when you buy your seat. The thing you need to look for is a seat that is user friendly.

If you can easily install it in a vehicle and apply the straps to your little one, you will no doubt be more confident when you use the equipment. Some seats are so poorly designed that nobody can manage the straps. They dont fit in the car well and are very difficult to get tight in a car.

Remember every seat is safe. No matter what you chose, you have a tested safety apparatus. But all seats are not created equal.

To start your child safety choices, I recommend the Snug Ride infant car seat by Graco. I recommend this seat because it is easy to install and easy to use. The straps work nicely and have very little drag. Do not install all types of aftermarket items in the seat. They are really unnecessary and can dramatically reduce the safe functioning of the seat. In this case, less is more.

The next stage would be your convertible seat. That means it faces both rear and forward. This transition to the larger seat is another area that many fall prey to. Never just face the baby forward even though they may be 20 pounds but only 8 months old. This is a huge mistake. When forward facing, the child should be at least 1 year of age AND 20 pounds. The reason for that is that the body must have the strength to take the G forces created in a crash. This can only happen with time for the body to mature and be stronger. The two models that I like for this stage are - the Roundabout and the Marathon by Britax. These two offer the parent great features and benefits plus ease of use that is unsurpassed.

Next they will be moving to booster seats. This is still a necessity to improve the results in safety if there were a crash. When youre done with your convertible seat, move to a booster seat. I recommend the Compass B-500. Its an excellent seat made from polystyrene and is comfortable and user friendly.

I have heard parents say they felt it was just a waste of money to keep buying seats until the age of at least 8 years old and 80 pounds, but if you want to give your child a reasonable chance of surviving an accident and reducing the chance of being severely injured, a booster is a must.

Use child safety restraints, use them correctly and learn how to use them from a professional certified technician.

Make every ride for your children the ride of their lives.

Buying A Baby Stroller

By Jason Hobbs

Having a baby in itself is a wonderful experience and can provide parents with some choicer to make. There is always the need to buy equipments and accessories for babies and parents can easily find themselves in unknown territory given the wide choices that are available at specialised stores. The decision to buy a baby stroller is faced by many parents and this guide will try to bring some information on the companies dealing with strollers.

Graco's Baby Strollers

The company has been set up in 1940 and was at that time specialised in car parts. They soon decided to diversify in the area of baby products and they begin with the making of a baby swing. From there they went on to develop a line of baby products that is ahs been well received by parents at large.

The Graco Company has now gained a reputation in the field of baby stroller and they even have several branches that deal with the stroller business. One of them is the Travel System type stroller and features an infant car seat that will be attached to the stroller. The only negative thing to this system is that once the baby reaches the weight of 20 pounds it will be soon time to replace the car seat although the stroller can still be used.

Another type of Graco stroller is the lightweight one. This lightweight baby stroller combines safety and practicality. Features such as cup and toys holders are added to this stroller. This is very useful since a lot of parents need to carry baby supplies with them.

Other Baby Strollers

Another name in the field of baby strollers is the Maclaren Company that is based in England. These strollers are renowned for their safety features that are available in all their strollers. And this without compromising on the weight of the strollers. Some of the Maclaren's strollers weigh as less as 8 pounds.

Combi is another choice for parents looking for a safe baby stroller that is lightweight and durable. This Company's stroller can be attached directly to an infant car seat and even has a model, Flash x, which features a shoulder strap. This is useful for busy parents that need to frequently take the planes.

Tips when choosing baby stroller

Always look for a baby stroller that suits your lifestyle. For example if you drive a car looks for one that could be attached to an infant car seat. There are a lot of sites for example that gives stroller reviews and this is a good opportunity to learn about the features of the strollers.

Always seek for information from friends and relatives before buying.

Finding the Best Budget Car Seat

By Phil Ayres

Picking a car seat for your new infant is one of the most critical choices you will make for your child's early safety. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that a properly installed child safety car seat in a passenger car can reduce the risk of fatal injury to infants by 71 percent, and to toddlers by 54 percent. In fact, many states and provinces insist that children be transported in an appropriate car seat. Check your local regulations before choosing a car seat, and be aware that you may need to purchase more than one car seat to meet your child's needs as he or she grows.

Car seat retailers offer a variety of car seat choices in different price points. As long as the car seat meets with the governing regulations, it will be safe (even budget models) - although there are different car seat styles and perks that may influence your decision on which car seat model to purchase.

The term car seat can refer to an infant-only car seat, an infant/child car seat, or an infant/child/booster car seat. An infant car seat is rear facing, and has height and weight restrictions of approximately 26 inches or 20 lbs; your car seat manual will provide specific restrictions. Your infant car seat can be installed permanently in your vehicle, or used as a removable carrier with a car seat base - a popular option for parents adjusting to life with a fragile new baby. Infant/child car seats can be used in a rear-facing position for infants, and in forward-facing mode for toddlers. The infant/child/booster car seat is used for older children who are not yet tall enough to use an adult seatbelt safely.

All three car seat configurations are available in most department stores, including discount retailers. It's a good idea to compare the features of each car seat before deciding on a particular car seat model.

Here are some tips to finding a great car seat:

  • Look for a car seat with a small 'footprint' to ensure a proper fit in compact vehicles;
  • Car seat covers come in a variety of fabrics. Dark colors hide stains well and work well for both boys and girls;
  • Many car seat packages include accessories like toys and cup holders. Ensure these extras are worth the higher price the car seat is likely to command;
  • Purchasing a 'travel system' with car seat and coordinating stroller tends to be less expensive than buying both pieces separately. This may be good value if you need both a car seat and a stroller.
It is also possible to buy a used car seat, although this should be done with caution to avoid buying a car seat that is too old (they have an expiry date), or one that has been damaged in an accident.

Regardless of whether you buy a new car seat or a used car seat, it is imperative to ensure the car seat meets safety standards, and to check with the manufacturer to determine if there have been any problems or recalls with the car seat you have for your child. Remember, safety first!
